older mission gloves

Recommended Posts

Does anyone recall when Mission hockey was making gloves with three fingers instead of four. It was only on one hand though (I believe the hand that would be at the bottom of your shaft)

What was the reasoning behind this? I always thought it was interesting but the gloves were hideous.

Thanks.

my goalie has a pair of these for when we play pond hockey, it was an interesting idea, but never quite caught on. Like you said, it was only on the bottom hand, so you had left shooting pairs and right shooting pairs. I'm not quite sure why they thought 3 fingers was a good concept, but I like playing around with them, they feel pretty good.

The top of the line pair had the 3 finger for one glove and 4 on the other.

I had the model that was 3 finger for both.

The reasoning was that you'd get more feel on the stick with 3 fingers hence the lower hand being the 3 finger on that top of the line pair. Hold a stick without your gloves on. The ring and pinky are together and when you stick handle they tend to stay together whereas the index and middle stagger in varying degrees as you move your hand up and down the shaft and roll your wrists... errr... that could totally be taken out of context.

I loved the 3 fingers and only recently retired mine after 10 years of use. Well, I lost one and the other was held together with tape and staples.

The cuffs in each "set" of gloves were also different. If you looked at the Left and Right glove, as a Left handed player...the Left (bottom) hand had the cuff rolled more toward the front/thumb...on the Right (top) glove had the cuff more to the back. The idea was that the cuffs were rolled to were each hand was most likely to need extra protection.

I had a pair of Mission Warp Sub Zero 3-Finger gloves. I loved them.

I love these gloves, They were out in 1999,I still use mine to this day along with my new Warrior's... It's wierd switching back to the more traditional glove in the Warrior after using my Warp0's for so long. When I get a chance I'll take some pic's of them and someone can upload them onto here... There is a diference in feel though, and I wish Mission would re-consider making them again.I love how my pinky finger is held in tight, especially when shooting while your rotating your wrist's and such, doesn't stray off. Anyway,Like I said, when I get back from my road trip tomorrow,I'll take some pics.. if I can't get them up on here,I'll post them on the Facebook group, them link them back to here.

I'm pretty sure the grommets came a bit after they started doing the 3 finger gloves. And i'm pretty sure the grommets were super cheap and had 3 fingers on both gloves. My wicked light gloves have 3 fingers on each glove and i'm still using them (got them in about 02 maybe). I'm pretty sure it was some of the warp series that used the 3 fingers on one glove and 4 on the other.

my friend had a pair when we were younger and one day at practice we switched gloves. I hated them and couldn't get used to them. Also when I was younger I heard a rumor the reason mission did this was because some pros put two fingers in one finger slot similar to what mission was doing. I don't know this to be true hence why I said it was a rumor, but still interesting food for thought.

These are definitely my gloves next season if I can find a decent pair in 15".

I had them for about 4 years and bought 2 new pairs of gloves while owning them, but kept going back to my Mission's. I don't know why but there is something I love about them.

In Tykes/Novice I always had my ring and pinky together in the ring finger part of the glove, so I think this adds to my love for them.

I have a prostock pair in Ducks colors, by far the ugliest pair of gloves I have ever owned, but awesome at the same time . Unfortunatley they are the the left shooter version (I forgot about that, and Hockeymonkey made no mention of this) so I am not going to use them. If I could find a righty version they would be my favorite gloves.

for those of you who care, im pretty sure they were called "gromments" or something

There were quite a few models in the 1999-2001 range that had the 3 finger design. The Grommets were the low end. Some of the other 3 finger designs were the Wicked Lights, Sub-Zero, Warp-zero, Warp sub-zero (nylon).

The Sub-zeros and Wicked lights had the 3 finger design on both hands.

The Warp series had the 3 finger design on your bottom hand only and the top (handle end) had a regular 4 finger design. The Warp 0 and sub 0 were a very unique design as the top and bottom hand were asymmetrical. The bottom hand had a reversed cuff to give you extra protection from slashes, a pretty genius design imo. One of my favorite pair of gloves ever. I still have a pair of Warp 0's and warp sub zeros that I use from time to time. I may have to take some pics I guess.

Here are some shots of them from one of the graphic designers that worked at mission at the time.

Wicked light: http://www3.sympatico.ca/jocelynpoulin/product4.html

Warp Zero: http://www3.sympatico.ca/jocelynpoulin/product7.html

*the sub-zeros were the same but used nylon instead of portifino

This never made it but a weird design... apparently they had some preliminary designs for a 2 finger glove: http://www3.sympatico.ca/jocelynpoulin/concept4.html

Or you could rip out the gussets between the 3rd and 4th fingers and sew the two fingers together.

I'll post some pics later tonight.

when I first started playing hockey a year ago I picked up a brand new pair of mission warp zeros on ebay. Pretty good feeling glove, but since they weren't the nylons they were pretty freakin heavy. Good protection especially on the wrists, and the 3 finger design was decent too. If i would have had the subzeros (nylon version) i would probably still be wearing them but ive gone to the one90s now

Here's a pic of my Easton 4400's switched over to three fingers. . .

1z6wlxu.jpg

I've done it to a few pairs of my gloves.

I cut out the gussets on the 3rd and 4th fingers and then sewed the leather together to make one large finger spot. Most people think the seam make by sewing the two peices together would be annoying but I don't even notice it.

When I started this topic I was hoping for some feedback other than "better feel". . . because I already knew there was an improvement in feel. I can't play with gloves with four fingers anymore on the lower hand. . . just feels weird

my buddy has a pair of warp zeros that were given to him when our old pro shop closed. he likes them, but they are hideous. never played with them so i can't comment on feel! he is now vulnerable to penguin jokes though.

i also play with a guy who still has those bent mission ergo butt ends, whatever they were called.
