Installing Skate Tongues

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to throw on some graf whit felt tongues on my one90's but after calling Sports ETC in Arlington and Pure Hockey in Braintree (two of the best hockey stores in the area) they said they wouldn't be able to change the tongues. I visited a local cobbler and he said he wouldn't be able to do the job.

is this just a dream that isn't going to happen or am I going to have to wait till the offseason to send these away to a completely random place?

any help would be appreciated!

A couple of places you may want to try are Zwickers in Bedford and TSR in Salem, NH. Pure Hockey and Sports Etc might be decent stores but they don't have know-how.

I'll have to check out zwickers, I've heard of that place before...

I'd just like to avoid sending my skates out to MN as I pretty much skate all year round.

Thinking if I do end up sending them out to hockeyrepair.com that I'll ask if he can replace the black leather trim on the one90 that goes through the eyelets and back by the tendon guard with white leather. At least if I have to wait for my skates it will be worth it in that sense (if he can do the job, which I feel he will be able to)

Hopefully Zwickers works out for you. If not, post it on here. As I recall when I needed to get new tongues sewn on my XXX's the guys at the shop here (NYC) said they sent it up to a guy up in Boston. I don't recall the name of who did it but I can always ask them.

The guy did a great job on tongues.

I have heard a few repair guys hem and haw about the composite toe box and being afraid to sew into that. We came to a safe compromise where they keep a couple of inches on the old tongue (where it attaches to the toebox) and simply sew the new tongue onto what's left of the old one. Worked great on the Eastons and 8090's I've had this done to.

Can't you just use the pre-existing holes that were already used to stitch the previous tongue in?

EDIT: Was typing my post as JR was typing his. Didn't want to make it look like I was not reading.

Deerok, please let me know who the guy was. I am looking to replace the tongues on my G9's

I just called them and they let me know that they would prefer not to reveal the name of their guy (since they would be cut out).

I spoke to David at West Side Skate and Stick. If none of the other options that were posted work out for you, give him a call and see what he can do for you.

Sounds shady...

The Shop?

I've dealt with them before and haven't had any problems; as far as why they don't want to give up the name; they want their commission for "brokering" the deal, is my guess.

Like I said, if none of the other options works out for Kovy' he can talk to them.

They're arrogant, I'm not surprised.

That's why we need you out here in NYC, JR!

In all honesty the guy sounded scared (I can't imagine losing that much business-how many people actually request new tongues?).

do any you guys know if the leather trim (for the one90's around the eyelets and back by the tendon guard) can be replaced? It's just a project I'd like to look into and am not sure if it's possible. I'll have to call up zwickers and see if they could do the work.

anyone ever try / thought about this?

Judging by their website and since they've copied their text/photos verbatim, they are going through Fixitbymail/Northern Sports Repairs.

update: the quest to find tongues has been a lot harder than I expected. Zwickers is able to replace the tongue but carries a very cheap tongue stock and won't order anything through graf>

My local cobbler said he wouldn't be able to rip the tongue out, install felt and sow back in.

Purehockey is telling me that I have to order through graf, graf is telling me to order through an authorized dealer *pure hockey*

NBH told me they won't send out their new white felt tongue on the one95, dead end there

every used graf skate I find is upwards of 200 dollars, so finding a decent used tongue is also proving a difficult task

Why are you looking to put graf tounges on your One90's??? It will !@#$ everything up as the tounges are not even close and two, the tounge is behind your shin guard you cant even see it.

I just spoke to Jason Figone at eastwest hockey and he said the new custom tongues will be available by March 15.
