Custom skates

Recommended Posts

JR, I know this is a bit off topic, but I was curious where your shop is. I thought I remembered that you were located in Florida. I will be in Florida in a few weeks, and have been thinking of getting custom skates done for awhile now. I'd love to stop in and chat with you if its convenient. Thanks a lot!

If anyone can help me, do you know any good LHS in the tri-state area that do custom fit skates. Preferably closer to NYC. I want to get custom fitted XXXX's. I'm on stock xxx's now. My dad raised me a bauer boy. I've always worn bauers but if i switch it would only be to grafs. I need a good spot in NYC that KNOWS skates and fitting.

i know this is far away from NYC but i buy my skates at plaza sports in mt sani call them up and ask if they do customs if you wanna drive out there.

How do you determine if you "need" custom skates? Also, will a custom fit in a pair of skates basically guarantee a perfect fit?

I'm also curious as to how much going custom increases the price of a skate. Say for instance the Vapor XXXX are typically sold for $550. If you got custom XXXXs how much would you expect to be paying?

Thanks

same thing i was wondering... if its custom you can go for the looks and features then right?

I was looking into this, I believe you cannot change the look of the skate that much besides the tongue and holder. Pro players get more options on the actual look of the skate. I found a picture of these 30's, I do not believe however that the public can order a custom skate like this :(

He meant that theoretically you could pick whatever skate you thought looked the best, solely on aesthetics, even if that skate doesn't fit you well stock. And yes, that's the idea behind a custom fitted skate. They don't really customize anything except the fit.

Granted, but because correctly-fitted Vapors skate a little differently than Flexlites or the various incarnations of the S9, one probably should choose the right skate as the custom model rather than the prettiest one.

Nope, and that's one of the major misconceptions out there about custom boots. You still have to put in the work.

For instance, a couple of months ago I had someone call the store looking for skates. Told me he had a really wide/high volume foot. I told him to come in.

Drove in from Lansing, came in and we talked shop for a bit after I checked out his feet. I threw the custom option out there and he was interested. I chcked my pocket and realized I didn't have a cloth tape measure on me so he volunteered to get one at the CVS at the corner.

Comes back in and is like, "You run ModSquad, right? I lurk on there." LOL

Anyway, like I said, hellawide and high-volume all around. Had a Supreme foot, but, on steroids. We went with oversized toecaps, a solid tendon guard, a 2mm heel lift, and high vamp (he was going to need more foot wrap - notice how much material between eyelets and edge of the boot)

JC, Do you know what the typical charge is for custom skates?

Also, could you do it for me over e-mail with a foot tracing and pictures of my feet?

No, walkerdb - because, I cannot see your foot. Nor will I take the responsibility of you being mis-sized because you didn't trace/measure correctly. Not only that, but scanners and faxes distort images. I mail the traces to NBH.

Is finding a good shop to get custom skates at difficult?

Thanks for the info, JR...did the skates end up working out for him?

Dear god - there's like 50% boot than a normal One90.

I might actually fit into that.

Does Bauer build customs only from traces and measurements, or will they work from a mold?

Just go to your LHS and ask them. If they do not know, have them bring in their sales rep to do the fitting. They are trained how to do it.

JR, do you know what the average turnaround time is for custom skates? You mentioned that it would take a long time for One95's right now because of NHL'ers but after that?

I just got some custom Nike Flexlite 12's. I was told it would take at least eight weeks. I got a call from my LHS about one week after they were ordered, telling me they were on the way, and would be here that Thursday or Friday. They actually came in on Wednesday, so it took only ten days. The guy at my LHS couldn't believe it!

That's awesome to hear.....hopefully when/if I order customs I will have the same luck as you!

Was talking to my dad about this tonight and I was wondering what a cost on something like those One90's is? How long did it take you to get those skates for the guy and are the skates still covered by a warranty that a normal pair would come with?

What did you get done? Could've been an off-the-rack pair.

Took NBH 5 wks, and they'll stand by their product.

THey can work from a mold. I've submitted castings before.

West Side Skate does an excellent job fitting skates. I believe they can do customs as well, but not sure what brands they have other than Graf. I do know they will work and work on a stock booth to make sure it fits and they are the ONLY skate shop in NYC that try to take care of their customers. The other shops as far as I'm concerned might as well be selling cars with the service they provide.

Here is their site: West Side Skate

Just go to your LHS and ask them. If they do not know, have them bring in their sales rep to do the fitting. They are trained how to do it.

JR, I only wish you visited the local shops in the NY area. A sales rep to come in and do a fitting??? No way.

The shops I have walked into ask you a size, and give you a box with a pair of skates in that size. Then it's off to the register to pay. Fitting? Non-existent.

That's why I'm a fan of West Side Skate, they actually care. I am in no way affiliated with them and I carry around their business cards in my hockey bag. I see guys at the rink in skates that are obviously a poor fit and just hand out cards.

I wish there were more people like you and them, especially closer to my house or office.

I'll second you on the West Side Skate in NYC. They are the only people in the city I let anywhere near my skates. Just stopped by there on Saturday to get my skates re-radius after the guys over at Chelsea screwed them up when I needed a quick sharpening.
