Simon Gagne is done for the year

Recommended Posts

This could be interesting for the Flyers as I've heard that if he doesn't return for the remainder of the year it's equivalent to him being on the LTI and his $5.xxM comes off the cap.

Basically a prorated amount of his salary wouldn't count. I'm a Devils fan, so I had to endure the whole Mogilny thing and I think technically Gagne's cap number does count, but his "replacement's" salary would not......if you've ever tried to read the CBA before, it'll give you a headache.

But yeah, the Flyers could add somebody making equal money and still be under the cap for this year. Even as an NJ fan, Gagne has always been a player I've enjoyed definitely a shame to see him go through this. Hopefully he doesn't end up like Adam Deadmarsh who was another one of my favorites.

The Flyers do have some assets to make a move.

That's really disappointing. I hope it's just a one year thing and doesn't turn into a Keith Primeau situation. That being said maybe the Flyers will get into the Hossa bidding. They need something (besides suring up their D) to get out of this slump.

I have a hunch Gagne will try to make a comeback, even if only for the post-season. I personally think this issue is going to plague him for a number of years, but hope it doesn't because he just has such awesome offensive ability.

He was referring to all the headshots the Flyers have dished out...Downie on McAmmond, the defenceman that crosschecked Kesler in the Face, the other defenceman that put someone into the boards

No question this is KP #2. Gagne takes a long time to recover from these as well (traditionally). As far as I'm concerned his NHL career is more so or less done. Next season he will play a string of 15-20 games before getting another, it will happen again, and finally he will call it quits in a year or two, IMO

Actually the specialist in Colorado that recommended he shut it down for the year stated that it was repeated recurrences of the initial concussion Gagne suffered in Florida, not 3 separate concussions. The doctor also said that with the rest Gagne will receive from now until the beginning of next season should be sufficient enough to return Gagne to the neurological state he was at before the initial concussion.

So I'd say your prediction doesn't have much merit.

Translation:

He never fully recovered from the concussion before they threw him back in the lineup. If this doesn't open some eyes about the way the Flyers treat concussions, nothing will. How much proof do people need?

I think the fact that the Flyers' have chronically mishandled injuries has been out there for some time now. Hopefully their allowance of Gagne missing the remainder of the season means the trend is changing.

They aren't letting him do anything, a medical expert told him not to play. I'm just trying to figure out where the NHLPA is on this stuff, shouldn't they be trying to make sure players are getting proper treatment and sound medical advice from day one?

From the NHLPA's stance on most things, as well as most other PA's I've, they seem to be less and less concerned with their players' overall wellbeing.
