There's an old saying... "Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a whole bunch of p***y", or something like that ;)
ha I gave up pro hockey to make about 60 times more putting my degree to use and getting a real job and let me tell you, now that camps have just ended and seasons have started, I miss playing way too much. I would have been content making my $750-$1000/month plus living expenses for quite a bit longer, even though i can clear that much $$ in about 5 days now you cant put a price on living your dream and getting paid to hang out with your best buddies. It's too bad life got in the way...

Ha know exactly what you mean. Although as you knwo there are certain "perks" that go along with playing hockey that you dont get working a regular job ;)

Im confused. Do you make 60 times what you used to for approx 720k gross, or do you clear 1k a week for about 78k after taxes?

Big difference in income there.

I dont see how this is an important part of the discussion, but it was a typo I meant 6 times. I played in lower European leagues and some of the low minors in the U.S. so I made abotu 10-12K per year plus housing, flights, equipment and some meals. I didn't bring much money home after living expenses, maybe 1,000 if i was lucky. I signed with another European team for 08-09 but I got a great job offer that I couldn't refuse. Im telling you, playing hockey was probably the hardest job I have ever had but the most fun. It is a rough way to earn a dollar though.

Come to think of it, you're right. How much you make isn't an important part of the discussion, but you brought it up. I can sympathize. I had a lot more fun, and led a more carefree life when I was in a band. But things like children, buying a home, and health insurance tend to make you look at things a bit different. I make over six figures, but sometimes I long for the days of more fun and less responsibility. Just feel lucky that you got to live your dream, even for a while....most dont even come close to living any of their dreams.

According to his facebook status today, he is playing Roller Hockey in France for the rest of the Season...

Yeah. With the influx of players sent down to the Reign, I think it got him bumped off the roster.

There's a post on IHC about it:

A player was sent down from Manchester and another player was picked up in a trade, I think this is why he is no longer on the roster but I am not sure.
I was going to make a full release about it but things are looking up as there are a couple of teams interested in bringing him aboard and we are looking into that now and should have an answer soon....

To answer the question longboarder, you pretty much have it - with guys constantly going up and down in the organization and them trading for Max Boisclair it was 3 extra forawrds on their roster and paying extra guys to do nothing but practice sometimes is a strain on their budget and the cap - so he was released unfortunatly....

After speaking with him yesterday he is totally optimistic and looking forward to what the next day holds and still working out and having fun - that's Itan

Hi, this is my first post here.

I'm one of the admin of the french website rollerhockeyfrance . com . A kind of french IHC.

From the informations we received today. And according to Itan's Facebook profile, it seems that he'll play in-line hockey in France for the rest of the season.

We have yet to find out which team has signed him, but Rethel (North-East of France) is the most likely to be the team he'll play for. Indeed, Rethel is the wealthiest team in France, and almost the only one that pays players. This is also the most successful one, with many french and european championships titles.

They have a good league there. I've never played Rethel, but I have played against other teams in european tournaments and Anger are one of the beeter teams I have played against including Narch finals and winternats experiences. I was surprised to hear that they were able to pay players, but good luck to him...

Hey Steve, for which european team did you play, and when ?

About players being paid. Itan will be one of the very few inline players paid solely to play. A few are paid as coaches, but only to play they are just a handful in France. It realy isn't the norm.

95% of the players have a "real" job for a living

As I created a topic but forgot the useful "search" button I repost my link to the interview here (US version below the french one). I hope this won't be considered as spam.

Also, an interesting article from the daily buletin here. though as I've just said, what's written about the average salary being around 1500 € and the top players getting around 3800 € si completely wrong. Wondering who lied here, the one who sent the mail, Itan, or the journalist. But this is definitely inaccurate.

Cant imagine they are going to pay him much....I guess he didnt want to go to CHL or even SPHL? I cant imagine him getting much more in a league where "95%" of the guys playing are doing so for free than a league where he at least gets a free play to stay + beer money.

answer:

though he hasn't agreed to a salary yet, Chavira said he could see a significant raise over the $400 a week he earned with the Reign.

Chavira is no stranger to Europe, having played for an Austrian ice hockey team over the summer before trying out for the Reign. At the time Chavira said he was committed to ice hockey full-time, but a number of factors - including a lack of interest from the American-based CHL and ECHL - changed his mind.

I know firsthand he had offers in the SPHL and one CHL team wanted him for next year, there was just no room right now with hundreds of players looking for spots, but the offer he got in France was too good to pass up, a decent raise over his ECHL salary, and tax free. 95% of the guys play for free in all levels of euro hockey, except elite leagues. Hell, in most lower leagues players PAY to play while imports get paid. Remember, he is one of the top roller hockey players in the world so he is quite desired in that regard. He is going to bring his ice skates and try to get a look from some Ligue magnus teams, as well as the local French d1 team for ice hockey with hopes of possibly continuing his ice hockey career next year either in the US, or in Europe. I know he has a tryout on the table in the CHL if he wants it with a premier organization in that league.

Will he be playing the Asiago Vipers at all?

He'll probably play them during the european champion's cup that'll take place at the end of november in Rethel.

Hey Steve, for which european team did you play, and when ?

Lichfield (UK) we used to play a lot of tournaments in France, Le Mans, Bauvine, Lille, Angers to name but a few. We haven't been over for a couple years as guys have slowly grown up, having to spend more time with families etc.... but we've played Angers a few times and they impressed me a lot.

The game in France is played on smaller rink (most of them are 40x20 (meters, don't know the inches conversion) )

It's less physical, no bodychecks at all. Two years ago, two american brothers played on my team (Casey & Kevin Kennedy, if some of you happen to know them, I think they're from San Francisco or near it) and they really had a hard time to adjust to it.

The individual skill level is probably not as good as in the US, but it seems that french team do play in a more organized way than american teams.

As I've said, Itan, getting paid for playing in the best french league, is an exception, not the norm. Rethel is almost the only team in France that pays players. You have to be really, really (really really :) ) good to for this.

There are also some teams in Italy (Asiago) and Spain that pays for players. Their national championships though is less skilled, and these teams play more for the european cup.

On a side note. Itan played his first game in France yesterday evening, against Grenoble. He scored two goals in a 7-5 victory.

So that makes him overrated? He's got amazing hands and does a lot of things no one else does (video taped or otherwise).
