Checking leagues

Recommended Posts

All I know is that the local rink doesn't have checking except for peewee. Does it just vary from rink to rink or is it only more advanced adult leagues that do checking? How does this work?

it varys depending on league, for minor hockey usually atom travel teams (9&10yr olds) is when they start checking, but housleague not till peewee, also adult leagues depends on who's organizing it, some beerleagues are full contact, where as some are no contact.

The chief variation around here (as far as I've seen) is no-hit leagues: contact is allowed, so you can separate the man from the puck, but attempting to hit full out is penalised.

Like J Mart said, it basically depends on what you want to play. You can find full-check men's league, or if you'd rather you can get into non-checking leagues as well.

You're going to have a hard time finding an adult checking league in the US, unless you live in New England, Michigan or Minnesota.

You're exactly right and that sucks. It's a large part of why Canada wins more internationally and produces more top players. Name an American star player that can hit and play gritty too? We're not producing players like Roenick anymore. We've totally wussified our collegiate programs.

Is there any particular reason for checking leagues being so scarce?

What does us having beerleague checking have to do with us winning internationally. Tell me how many beerleaguers there are in the show? And americans start hitting earlier than canadians, atleast for sure in alberta, and we are probably one of the "grittiest" provinces

Canada just has deeper roots than America. Leagues are spread out across the country, while it's scattered around in the United States. You can find rec leagues most anywhere in the States but competitive doesn't exist nationwide like in Canada.

I would never play in an adult full contact league, too many idiots out there for me. I can stick handle with my head up and am shifty, but when someone is losing and wants to prove to their wifey in the stands they are big and tough, I would rather not be on the ice. Not to mention the few guys that think they can still make the show.

Also the differentiation of skill levels and size/strength in players would be another reason they might be hard to find. My team has alot of younger guys, but we do get pushed around by the teams with 30 year olds and their 'old man muscle'. And for all those guys that can't stick handle and look up at the same time..... ouch

Our league you can have body contact, but no hitting. Personally I like being able to wake up the next morning without being sore from people hitting me. I would rather go out on the ice and have fun, not worrying about getting my head rung. I have done the competitive thing already. And I love not having to wear shoulder pads! Feels so much better.

Changing next season J Mart, Hockey Canada passed a regulation at November's AGM to make introduction of checking uniform across Canada. Will start at Peewee, the pilot program/study that allowed Ontario and Sask. to allow checking beginning in Atom has ended.

Its good we will all follow the same rules as entering tournaments with no checking because Quebec or US teams were playing was dificult-hard for the kids to adjust. I wish HC would have chosen 8 years old as the age to allow checking. I think introducing body contact younger is safer, kids grow up with it as part of the game instead of suddenly being allowed to hit when 12 years old. Evidently studies proved that wrong, according to HC.

As for checking for 40 year olds in beer leagues, I'm sore enough the morning after games already.

checking doesn't start in the U.S. until Pee-Wee. Alot of house leagues don't allow checking and most adult leagues don't allow it.

Personally I wouldn't play in a checking beer league. I need to work in the morning and to many idiots would think it's some sort of try out for the big show. There are enough problems with dopes in beer league as it is.

Think of your typical adult league team, how many of those guys have either been coached or played full conntact before? you can put a body into some one whos never been taught how to recieve it, youd injure too many people.

In my area one league is "D zone checking" but theres hardly a hit in the game

I play in an Elite adult full contact league, mostly 21-27's who played some amount of good hockey some where... and me

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but back when I was playing Peewee, HC didn't allow checking until Bantams, no? I vaugely remember two years of Peewee where I went to Canada for tourneys and we weren't allowed to check. I could be thinking of the time I went to play in Europe, but I thought it was Canada.

HOCKEY CANADA SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING

CONCLUDES IN CALGARY, AB

CALGARY, AB – Hockey Canada’s semi-annual meeting concluded on Saturday afternoon in Calgary, AB, as the Hockey Canada Board of Directors voted on a number of proposals impacting hockey at all levels in Canada.

The Hockey Canada semi-annual meeting brings together the Hockey Canada Board of Directors – the Hockey Canada Officers, representatives from all 13 member Branches, council directors, Canadian Hockey League (CHL) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) representatives and athlete representatives - to discuss ways to enhance hockey at all levels in Canada.

Highlights from this weekend’s proceedings:

A motion to allow body checking at the Atom level (9-10 years old) was defeated. The regulation for the introduction of body checking will remain at the Peewee level (11-12 years old) and above in Canada. This ruling will take effect in 2008-09, which means that current pilot projects in Ontario and Saskatchewan will be able to complete the current season with body checking at the Atom level. As of 2008-09, body checking will be introduced at the Peewee level or above.

You may be thinking of Europe-or the Canadian Tourney you entered had European teams in it. In that case Canadian tournaments usually don't allow checking/bc....not just when playing the European teams but in all games.

Amen on the no shoulder pads. I also have no interest in getting checked in beer league. It would be curtains for the less skilled guys who aren't looking out for the big hit.

i definitely agree that it's a good thing that there's no hitting in my beer league. sometime's it's frusrating when i have a perfect oportunity to make a nice clean body check, but i'd say at least 25% of the people on the ice never played competetive hockey with checking, and i wouldnt want to hit or be hit byany of them. it's just entirely too dangerous if one of you has no idea what to do.

Here's the way I look at it. I've played senior and elite adult leagues for the past 7 years. With the exception of one league that required it, I don't wear shouldies. Reason being is that, let's be honest here, at this age none of us are going to the show, and there sure as hell isn't any ink to be signed either, so why bother going around trucking guys. It's ridiculous. Every league I have been in we all had to go to work in the morning so no one out of respect is going to clock anyone else. Those years passed when we all stopped playing competitive hockey.
