Supreme 8090 initial thoughts

Recommended Posts

I just got a pair of them today (happy birthday to me!) along with an evaluation booklet from BNH. I get to test them and record my thoughts for 10 weeks.

Initial thoughts - I dropped half a size and went with a D width. The skate felt pretty good out of the box (except for my rear-foot, which felt slight pressure.) After I molded them, they felt great. EASILY the best Bauer skates I have ever put on...I had skated in Bauer all my life before my brief skate in CCM and then Graf then Mission.

Slapped a fwd radius on the Lightspeed. I'll be providing updates every time I skate.

I skated a few laps with them tonight. NO PAIN...I mainly did a bunch of sharp turns in them. The skates even with the fwd radius felt a little back on my heels. Other than that, they felt pretty frickin' good. I'm gonna give it a few more laps tomorrow and possibly use them Thursday night in my game.

Now is this comparable to other top end Bauers. These were going for a fair bit cheaper maybe 5/6 the cost of the XXs and 8000s, yet I was under the impression they are on the same level.

Yes. They are.

Keep in mind they basically took bits and pieces from the three top-end BNH skates (Vapor tongue, V12 outsole, Supreme innards, Mega 10-90 fit) and threw them all together. Not to mention they are lighter and more durable than XX. Why they don't market it as such is beyond me. I think that you'll see a lot of pros switching over...

Woah, you make them sound so good, but I'm sticking by Graf.

Oh teah, what's the toe cap made of? Vintage bauer or high tech nike plastic.

I tried the 8090 on my one good foot and they were quite nice. I am coming from CCM pro tacks and the 8090 may be my new skate once I get the doctors ok to play again

The 8090 is a great skate. Was on my list with S500's and Vector Pro's, but I had fitment issues with my ankles and had to pass.

I forgot, Happy Belated Birthday JR!

Happy belated birthday! I got another present for you this week from Maximum Edge so you will get at least two freebies (if you can call the M-E stuff free after all the work you did on my skates) this week. I am definitely interested in hearing how the 8090s work out. I am glad they have used the Nike outsole because I would definitely give it an A+ as far as feel goes. The Vapor tongue is better than the Nike (the Nike one is shaped kind of funny and gets in the way a lot) but I would still prefer something a little thicker for padding and protection (the two go hand in hand). I had (and loved) Mega 10-90s and Air 90s so the fact that the 8090s fit like those classics is another plus for these skates. The price (below the Vapors) is a huge plus to go along with the rest of them. Why so much cheaper than Vapors when they are a step forward R&D wise? Maybe b/c Bauer lost a lot of Supreme customers when the Classic series flopped and they want to get some players back in to the Supreme line. Who knows? Keep us updated.

JR- Does it feel weird skating in the 8090s coming from a supple fit skate?

Yes, for two reasons -

One - the boot is higher-cut than the Mission...turns are different.

Two - They're stiffer. However, surprisingly, they did not feel clunky - I think that's where the weight comes in.

Slight bend in one of them. Nothing major. I straightened it out however.

The toe of the skate is angled up a bit on both skates so you have that gap between the holder and the the outsole.

That sucks ^.

If the Vapor XXXs arent anything special, I'll be gettin me a pair of 8090s near december.

I'll be real interested to see how quickly the 8090s break in. Everyone I know whose used the top of the line Supremes (7000s and 8000s) has had a bitch of a time breaking them in.

Well I've had mine since about early july after having a major debalce with some grafs. But these are very suprisingly easy to break in for a high end stiff skate. I will say though this is not a skate you wanna experiment with sinching up the laces tighter than usual as I've refed a few games and played in a few with that experimental mentality and good god it hurt more than gettin my tattoo. Awsome performing skate as far as I'm concerned and I really hope the durabilty shines on these.
