Who said the reason Samsonov was good was Joe Thornton?

Are you kidding me, I went to a couple of open Habs pratice and not all of the guys look great in practice. Again, it's not everyone who has an eye to see skills. Some doesn't see skills much.

I'm not sure if you are suggesting some players don't play hard in practice or you feel they really don't belong in the NHL.

If the answer is you really don't think some players belong in the NHL, that's silly, because it essentially implies that either GM's, coaches and scouts are all bad at their jobs when they invite 40+ players to training camp, or they aren't competitive enough to try to field a team with the best players available. We know neither of those answers are true, which means NHL players are there because enough of these talent evaluators believed they had enough NHL skills to deserve to be there.

I think a friend of mine who founded a fairly popular hockey school, and who has been a personal skate coach to NHL players (including a no-doubt future Hall of Famer) said it best. He said there are a lot of players who have NHL skills, but they don't have enough of them. That may be why you think some players exhibit lesser skills at puckhandling or skating, because they do compared to some non-NHL players, but their overall package of skills is obviously greater than the non-NHL players.

My friend is a great example. He had many NHL level skills, but the biggest skill he was missing was size. He weighed 163 pounds out of college and was invited to play in Europe, but decided not to. That said, he was telling me that the difference between himself and an NHL player is they both could skate into a curve at the same speed, but the NHL player would maintain the speed coming out of the curve.

Again, it's a players package of skills that will earn them a spot in the NHL.

I think Jason Harris said it best. There are many players who have insane stickhandling (Kovy Ribs) and others who have 90mph+ slapshots (i have had my best clocked at 91 mph with a standing start) but i will ber hte irst to admit that i would never make it to the NHL.

There are many players in this world that have some of the skills that make it, but very few to make it.

I don't think some of you guys realize how good NHL players are. I don't get people coming on here saying "Oh this guy sucks" or "he can't stickhandle," they're all good. The speed at which they play is probably faster than any of us can imagine, they play in front of thousands of fans every night. They are the best of the best. Think of how many players in junior, college, minor leagues never play in the NHL, even players who rack up 250 points in the juniors never see a second of NHL ice time. Add to that playing a grinding 82 game season, travelling constantly, trying to play a consistently good game every night. It really makes you appreciate players like Crosby, Ovechkin, Alfredsson, Iginla, Malkin, Lidstrom etc. who are able to bring it every night against the best in the world.

I don't think any self-respecting hockey fan or player would go as far to say a player in the pro's "sucked" so I suggest not paying attention to those who are clearly uninformed. With that said, it's incredibly possible for a guy to be in the league and not use his skill or talent, and instead resort to cheap shots and dirty playing. Those are the guys that people are, and should be complaining about.

I think Laviolette's style worked well for Sammy. It allows for offensive creativity.

Then he better hope Lavy stays. One more missed playoff...and he could be toast, no?

It is possible. However, I think with a healthy season the Canes could be a top team next season. They got killed by injuries this year.

It doesn't matter how awesome they would be playing with us Habookus. They could do circles around me if they played me and I have ever right to say they suck and are no good, because I am not comparing them to myself but to other players in the league. Also every fan has the right to say that because we as fans pretty much insure that the pros have a paycheck.

I haven't seen him play at all so I don't know how he is playing at all. He might be one of those players who only plays well when they are going for a contract. They play the Leafs this afternoon so I'll actually be able to see him play.

The flood gates are open now. Nah, not really. I don't get how this guy can't put up points this year. He's getting his chances and was skating with Staal Saturday afternoon.
