Modifying shoulder pads

Recommended Posts

Question, has anyone gone with high end shoulders, and took off the big-ass caps? I like the idea of having the best chest/rib protection available without the big caps.

The clavicle protection on theRBK 9k's seems to be so wide it does enough to cover the shoulders as well. (Beer league hockey)

There are a few pairs that have removable caps so that you'd be able to replace them if you wanted. I am not sure if any current pairs have that feature, however.

See if your LHS or a local shoe repair shop would be able to reattach them if you decide to change your mind. They are simply sewn on in most cases, so if you seam rip instead of just cut them off you should be able to minimize the damage.

I have 6k shoulders and removed the arm guards via the velcro straps for better arm mobility. I haven't thought about the caps, I want them there though.

A buddy of mine did that with older Jofa shoulders.

Thanks Chadd,

Did he have any issues?

None at all and he isn't all that big.

That is not all that uncommon. If you play in a non-checking league then you really don't have a need for them except as a buffer in case you fall into the boards like Gomez did yesterday in the NYR/PHI game. They are pretty simple to take off. But, if you don't have a serious problem with them, I'd keep them on.

Iceman did you do that yourself? I'm thinking about putting some Bauer 300 caps on the old 5000 Gel chest protector.

Ideally you'd want to have them sewn on but if you were in a pinch some helmet screws would do the trick.

I wouldn't use helmet screws... personally I think hat would leave to much risk for puncture.

I actually just took the shoulder caps from the sherwood 5030 classics and sewed them onto my suspenders... kinda like gretzky. I never really had a problem with those caps but I'm not a big fane of a lot of constriction near my chest or back... not that the sherwood one gave me that uch a problem, but i'm in a non check league.

I've done it plenty of times. You just have to know where to place them. Don't have them up against your bare skin. Place them between some of the padding so they aren't exposed. Remember that a little foam is all that is needed to protect your head from the helmet screws. But again, I said only if you are in a pinch. Sewing is definitely the way to go if possible.

No. I did not do it myself. I took it to a Shoe Repair place (in Vancouver). He also does re-palming of gloves so it was a pretty simple job (for him not me).

Yeah, I've decided I am gonna just remove the caps from my 9k's, because I really like everything else about them. For my money, nothing else is built like the Jofa/9K stuff.

I will post pictures when I do.
