Coaching Issues

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

Ok so my coach today after practice calls everyone over to tell them that there is a game this week. I knew there wasn't because he sent out an e-mail at the beginning of the season saying that there is no game due to spring break. Anyways, I told him that there wasn't and that it was mentioned in the e-mail. He goes on to say that there was no e-mail and that I should go check the the schedule. So I go check it at the reception desk, and I was right the entire time. So he calls the team back together to tell them that he was wrong and for the team to not show up at the rink this week. After that, he decides that I had offended him in some way. Now I need to add that me and him have not had the greatest history (I've gone to the school about issues I have had with him). So he starts to give me this talk about the team needing one source of info and how I was becoming the 2nd source. I replied that I was merely telling them that the games were not to be held and that they should know that before they left. He takes this as a challenge and holds me for another 10 mins of explaining how I am causing a disturbance in the balance of power of the team. In the end, I got so tired of listening to his bullshit that I told him that I understood what he was saying and left.

I really have no idea what to do about this guy. It seems as if everything I say to him is an insult through his eyes. Anyways, if you made it this far through my little rant thing, thanks for reading.

I'm assuming this is a high school team? Take it to the head of the school or districts sports program, and let them know what's going on.

Yeah this is high school and I already went to the school, to which they said tough luck because he is a teacher and they want a teacher for a coach. Fun thing is that he has been complained about by at least 7 families and they still shrug it off as if its nothing

Get a list of signatures, or a letter of complaint from all 7 families, including your own. That might, and I mean might, do something.

Yeah, sounds like a crap situation. Never been in one like that myself, but I still suggest taking it up with a higher-up again, if only to make a stink about it and not let the case get swept under the rug.

I might just do that. They need to realize that I mean business and that I think its crap that I am the one getting special treatment.

sounds more like he feels disrespected that you would correct him or call him out in front of the team like that...

You need to look at it like this.... he is the BOSS do as he says and thats it....

what he probably means by you being a second source of information really is a nice way of reminding you that you are not the coach and that it is his job to inform the team of anything and not yours... as petty as that may sound I fully understand what he means... I dont think it was a good idea to say anything about not having a game on the schedule in front of everyone like that.. might be best to pull his aside and let him know he was wrong..

The biggest mistake any player makes is by venting frustrations about the coach, their philosophy ect. to the other players, especially in a situation where you are being coached by a teacher... they arent going anywhere, get used to it or just dont play...

sorry to seem like im taking the coach's side but im calling it as I see it...

He sure does sound like he has quite the ego tho...

Sounds like neither of you are right.

Could you please elaborate/explain?

I understand your point of view and respect it. I actually wanted to quit the team but the athletic director said that I should let him have another chance. That and my parents wanted me to use it for extra ice time.

Looks like shootsnscores pretty much covered it all. My point is simply because one side is wrong doesn't make the other side right.

Maybe it was the way you put the game info forward? I would have np being corrected, would appreciate not having to phone everyone at home so would like to know right away if I announced a game/practise wrong. Your coach is either a complete jerk or just took exception to the manner in which you 'helped out'.

6-7 families don't like the coach?...maybe all 17 won't like the replacement. I bet HS hockey pays well, lots of applicants each season? Suck it up, work hard-if the coach actually doesn't like you a positive attitude and your winning the bag races in practise will really annoy him.

Ok that makes sense to me.

Actually there weren't many applicants. There were two others that were well liked among the parents who have actual hockey experience, unlike the one that was chosen who gets his plays from Hockey for Dummies books (I kid you not)

There has to be a reason your coach doesn't like you. You don't have to tell people on this board why, but be honest with yourself and figure out for yourself and try to fix the relationship.

I'm not accusing you, but coaches don't hate players for no reason, there is something, maybe your a puck hog, or your really good but your not trying and half assing it. Maybe you show him up some how, I don't know, I don't know you, but fix yourself and then if it continues, do the petition thing. If seven families don't like him, I'm sure you guys would be able to get a new coach.

That would Zamboni's point, I believe. Be glad you have a coach, it is a thankless job with little or no pay.

Alright so I've decided that this man is not worth my effort anymore. After all he is one of the reasons why I have lost skill.

to the person who wants to know why he hates me :

One day at practice one of the coaches wasn't wearing a helmet and the main guy (who hates me) is usually really anal about that stuff. I make a quick joke like "wheres the helmet?" and he goes off on me telling me that I am arrogant and other crap like that. First off he has no right to call me arrogant because his own sons dont bother to show up at practice because they think they are the best players in the world. After this i go to another practice that I help coach with a friend. He knows that i do this, but tells me that I have to stay for a non mandatory off ice workout. I tell him that I already made plans before and that I would not be going. A couple of days later, he shows up in a class that I was in and gives me a note saying that I have to apologize to him and the teams because I did not go to the workout. I showed the letter to my parents to which they saw no reason for disciplinary action since he knew from day one that I helped to coach and didnt have a problem until that day. Long story short, I go to the athletic director with other families to which we are told that they will do nothing about it.

The "where's the helmet" thing got you in trouble because it looks like you are mocking the head coach. Not a smart thing to do.

As for the coach's kids, haven't your parents already given you the "I don't care what other kids are allowed to do, worry about yourself" speech?

I coach during the fall, and will tell you that there are few things that will set off a coach faster than being shown up in front of the team. The last place I coached, I made up my mind with two weeks left in the season that I wasn't returning because the head coach would show up assistants and then would do nothing if players were mouthing off.

That said, I won't defend the coach doing the same thing to you. You doing it to him undercuts his authority in front of the team, him doing it to you makes him look like a prick in front of the team.

I realize the no helmet thing was kind of bad, but back then me and him could joke around without any consequence.

And yes my parents have talked to me about that. The whole point behind it is that their father is the head coach and they should be setting an example, which is not a very good one. Do you catch my drift?

I see your point, Archangel, but what you need to realize is that it doesn't matter that you were technically correct. You undermined the coach's authority in front of the team on both occasions. My advice is for you to just do what you're told, and try not to torpedo the coach, if you want to keep playing there.

Thats the thing. I dont mean to undermine him, I just tried to help out.

I can now realize how this went wrong. From now on I'll keep my mouth shut and let him do whatever he wants

Getting into all this crap always ends up bad for everyone. You will not get any satisfaction by going after him, or even complaining about him.

Just play and make the most of your season. You determine what you take out of a season, nobody else.

My question is this: "Who would want a job where the previous guy got fired because of a petition?" The first time a new guy goes Mike Ditka on the team will you all start a petition? Being in the military maybe I look at situations like this in a different light. Sometimes you just keep your trap shut and do what your told. If you have issues with it, bring it up in private after practice or whatever. It's disrespectfull to make comments, justified or not, or question him in front of your team.
