Is the trapezoid behind the good?

Recommended Posts

I personally enjoy the trapezoid. Marty Brodeur used to be deadly behind the net along with other goaltenders, and now that they can't go into the boards, it keeps play alive longer generally!

ive always thought the goalie should be able to get hit if they play the puck... maybe it should be a rule that you can hit them if they play the puck outside of the trapezoid?

just thinking outloud (kinda)

but on subject i like the trapezoid, llike extremeshot said it keeps play moving

Was the trapezoid behind the net actually a good move?

I think giving goalies free range to play it is more likely to end up in scoring one of 2 ways:

1. Long pass from the good puck handling goalies (Brodeur, DiPietro, Turco) that lead to breakaways...and...

2. Giveaways from the iffy stickhandling 'tender.

Well i was just thinking about this because of all this talk about revisiting no touch icing. I know goalies usually let icing go but sometimes the would go out and play it to keep the play moving or create that long pass catching the other team on a change

I think it's stupid it slows the game down. And it creates the boring "OMG, he might touch the puck in the no-no zone!" type of action. You might as well say defensemen can't touch the puck in the faceoff circles. Oh god, I hope I didnt give him any ideas.

I totally agree, I like the trapazoids but if they take them away, they should let goalies get hit when they are behind the goal line.

I'm telling you if goalies knew they would get hit behind the net, they wouldn't be coming out half as offen as they do now.

Players will NEVER be allowed to hit goalies. Who makes the rules for the NHL? The owners. Who pays those multi-million dollar paychecks to goalies who get hurt from shifty plays? The owners.

Trapezoid rule needs to be changed.

I say a good move would be to let the goalie bring the puck in, but still not be allowed to get the puck in the corners. It should help move powerplays as the goalie will be less likely to leave the puck behind the net for a setup, and less plays where the goalie just shields the puck waiting for a teammate to arrive.

The only thing I see wrong about that trapezoid is that it slows the game down by not allowing the goalie to touch the puck until the trapezoid, even if the play is far away from them without being called icing, because they either have to wait for the puck to come around or their players to come to the puck

I am totally against the Trapezoid. I believe it's counter-productive to what the NHL trying to achieve more scoring in it's games. I miss seeing a puck playing goaltender like Brodeur throw a nice pass to a teammate and seeing him go in and score a goal on the other end.

I was actually thinking just the other day that the trapezoid rule should be voided for teams on the PP. It could help teams set up and go back into the offensive zone after a clear by the SH team.

I agree with that one. Although it's highly unrealistic, make the tenders fair game, it would make things a lot more interesting and spark a lot of fights which could be good in a way. I think it's more exciting when the goalies go to the corners to play pucks, it speeds things up instead of waiting for the puck to reach the damn trapazoid lines.

kinda off topic. When was the last time a goaltender scored?

Chris Mason was credited with a goal against the Coyotes because he was the last player from the Predators to touch the puck when Geoff Sanderson shot the puck into his own net (Coyotes) April 15 2006, but the last goalie to actually shoot the puck the length of the ice to score was Evgeni Nabokov with the San Jose Sharks on a powerplay, the only goalie to do so, March 10 2002
