I was waiting for the bus yesterday and an old man took a break from digging through the garbage can to try and hand me some pamphlets about it. I don't really have anything against the environment, but don't try to hand me something after I've just seen you waist deep in a garbage can. I'll just look at the website, thanks.

They coulda done a better job of getting the word out. The first I heard of it was during the Leafs pre-game on center ice. I was running the dryer at the time.

I think the "Earth Hour" got a fair bit of attention. If you are on Facebook, at least once a week for the last 2 months you should have recieved an invite to join the "Earth Hour Group". That's where and when I first heard about it. Lots of big cities were having "Earth Hour" events were City Hall would be dark.

Obviously turnign off streetlights and such would not be in the best interest of safety, but I know Hamilton was planning to turn off the "decoration" lights around town on Saturday night.

I was under the assumption that the expectation was to turn off ALL electrical devices for an hour...when we found out all they wanted was lights out...we lit a bunch of candles and watched the game by candle light. Even Dr. Suzuki said we could leave the game on...*L*

just what every city wants...a power surge from everyone turning thier power on at once.

As discussed, Earth Hour will not create a surge in power because:

When people turn their lights back on, the system has still been working for the whole hour, just not as heavily.

Earth Hour is different from a blackout. What happens in blackouts is that all equipment, including heavy equipment such and furnace motors and fans, start working at once. When everything comes back on all at once, the system can short out.

That was in one of the facebook groups.

The promoters admitted that they know it wasn't going to save much money/energy. It was more to get the idea out to people that you may not needs everything on all the time. Some of the buildings in Chicago reportedly found some lights they were running that no one knew about nor did they need to be on.

i went to a movie, so i guess my apartment was off during the hour.

I think it was more about awareness than actual savings.

I totallí agree, it is just to test and show people how much energy and emissions could be saved if the turn the lights off. I guess the main idea is to have people realize that if they turn off useless lights its good for the environment.
