RBK 9k vs Tackla 5000 Pros

Recommended Posts

My hips are taking a beating. So, I'm looking to get a pant with more protection. There seems to be a general consensus around here that Tacklas are the best, in terms of overall quality and comfort. On the other hand, there seems to be mixed opinions about the RBK 9K. Both offer top notch protection, but which is better?

I can't speak to the 9Ks, but I recently picked up some Tackla 5000s and they really are amazing. Definitely the best pant I've ever worn. I love the snug waist/hips and loose leg fit. It's like you're not even wearing pants.

Either way your hip will smile. I've had the 5000 pros and they are an excellent pant. Right now I am in 9k's and I love them even more because the hip and tailbone protection doesn't move around while manouvering and yet the floating thigh pads make them instantly game ready. I have become a huge fan of a girdle and/or pant that is snug fitting in the hip/tailbone area with the loose/floating thigh pads (best of both worlds).

I have the one90 girdles now but I used to have Tacklas and they were excellent with the hip protection. I'm tall and thin and have always had issues with hip pointers. The Tacklas definitely helped. (The one90's are good too.)

I switched from Tacklas to NBH XXXlites. I really like the NBH pants but I would have to say Tacklas are more protective esicially in hip area.

I wore the Tackla 5000 Pro before I went with the RBK 9K. I only switched because I outgrew my Tacklas. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with either one. The RBK is more expensive, so if money is an issue, I would go with the Tacklas. I think they're both great.

edited for spelling

Nice, thanks for all the input. I've never used a girdle, but I'm tempted to do so. Thanks again.

Glad to hear that since I've always dreamt of playing with no pants.

without creating a new topic, i would like to ask for your advice. I have been using rbk 9k pants for a while, and now i co thinking about switching to a new pants or for a new shell for rbk. Can you share your personal opinion on which pant you like more and for what reason, tackla 5000 or rbk 9k? Also i dont have an opportunity to try the tackla on, so can you tell me how is the back protection on them? According to the picture-not to well? is there any more protective tackla model? The nearest lhs from me with the tackla staff is at least 500 miles away.

If you're talking about the new 9k pants they and the Tackla 5000 were my top two choices when I was shopping last year. I went Tackla because they felt a little roomier in the legs and they have the great reputation. The 9k's feel like they have a bit better/taller back and spine protection though that hugs and moves with you while the Tacklas have a little lower spine protection that is more stationary like a belt.

i was talking about earlier 9k, the hybrid girdle. But thanks, your review is helpful. I did notice from the pictures that the back protection of tackla 5000 is not as tall as on some other models, i think that for me its better to feel secure in that area. Pitty though. Are pro players playing like that?

In my opinion both the 9K's and the Tackla 5000's provide excellent protection but the fit of the Tacklas is nicer. It's a personal preference thing. I'd never turn down a pair of 9K's though and they are better pricewise if your on a budget. Really can't go wrong either way you go.

i havent seen the new 9k, but i heard that they are solid one piece pants. Old 9k are like girdles with cool shell. Maybe somebody will correct me about new ones.

I didn't like the old 9k/newer 11k with the girdle. I actually had a pair of old 8k's (similar) for a week and while they were bulletproof, it was a huge pain to get them on and I didn't like the feel of wearing them. The Tacklas are more of a roomy pant, just pull them on. The new 9k's are a little more of a fitted pant not quite as bulky and a bit tighter fitting in the legs with a separate spine/back piece which floats against the back. Like I said I think they are both really good pants but I like the fit of the Tacklas and their quality seems to be a lot better. You can find 10 year old Tacklas all day long in stores but a couple of my newer Reebok protective pieces had some threads coming loose.

Thank you for the answers. Can somebody tell me if pro Tackla 5000 are made in Canada if they are being sold in USA?

Like in here:

http://www.hockeygear.com/tacpro50brse.html

If not, any idea on how can a man find a canadian made tackla pro 5000 online?

I'd call and ask. Some were made overseas I believe in Thailand. I just a week or two ago found a pair of 5000X's on eBay that were made in Canada. Seller had a few pair of them. Black with silver/red stripes. They must've been some customs that never were used. Not sure if they still have more listed or not.

If I remember correctly, the Canadian-made Tackla pro 5000 pants are now the PPF pants made by Eagle, so I think that's what you'd want to take a look at (unless you specifically want the Tackla branding). Someone pls correct me if this is wrong.

Thanks.

to make current Tackla situation clear. Is still like it use to be - made in Canada is being sold in Canada and Asia made is sold in USA? How about Finland? Do they make'em?

The Canadian made Tacklas are made in Montreal and they do not sell them in the U.S. The U.S. Tacklas are made in Thailand. It's very doubtful you'll find the ones made in Finland due to export laws in Europe. I have no idea about the quality of the U.S.sold Tacklas but I have heard good reviews on them. The Canadian made Tacklas quality is excellent. If you live near a border point you could scoot across to Canada and pick up a pair of 5000's at a store here. As previouly mentioned they also come in the Eagle brand name as well and if your not picky on brand names on your equipment your getting essentially the same product.

On line you could try myhockeystore.com. They are based in Vancouver.

I had a pair of the Thai ones and IMO the construction of the lowers was not as high a quality as the Canadian version. The uppers were fine though. The Velcro, zippers, and seams were not as nice but even at that they were still a great pant.
