Oh, I am NOT disputing the fact that vinegar kills germs and mould. Why do you think beer and wine only goes up to a certain alcohol content no matter how much yeast or sugar you put in it, without having to distill it to get it to a higher level? It is because the the yeast die of alcohol (waste product) poisoning. Vinegar, like Hydro-Chloric acid, WILL kill the bacteria and mould, but spraying it on and leaving it on MAY cause damage to the fabric/material of your gear. If you leave vinegar on your skin long enough, it will eat through your skin cells. That's like spraying vinegar on your gear one day, then wearing it the next. And with anything organic, unless you have a microbiology degree, you never know what the mixture of vinegar, dead or half-dead bacteria/germs/mould would turn out.

i'm not trying to start an argument here, but it seems like Dettol residue on your skin wouldn't be much better. That's pretty harsh stuff isn't it?

Nice!

At a high concentration level, yes, you are right, it wouldn't be "good", but hospitals use Dettol to clean wounds, wipe baby's toys clean and as a general disinfectant. One cap in a washer load is harmless, after the rinse cycle. You can even bathe in diluted Dettol water, but you'd smell like disinfectant for the day...... The real harm is ingestion, so unless you drink the bath water, you'd be safe.

It is basically chlorine or lysol in a different form. The key is just it's not organic, so it kills the stuff that cause the smell, and stops there.

i have been doing it for over a year, and have not noticed any fabric breakdown, or skin issues. maybe thats why they recommend a 5% solution and not higher.

The more I read about this, the more I think I'll stop spraying crap all over everything, and just give it a good wash in the tub every few months or so.

A LHS around here just got a Sani-Sport machine, so I'll probably treat my gear a few times a year.

Sani-Sport uses Ozone to kill the bacteria, then applies a sort of pine scent to keep it smelling nice (as possible).

Yea maybe I am paroniod about bacteria and stuff, but I would never put "my boys" in a place were "other boys" have been. Yea the ozone would prolly kill any residue bacteria of the "other boys", but I am going to stick to doing it at home. Whats that Sani-sport cost per wash? $30 - You could get a good skate bake for that. LOL

P.S. suffice it to say, when I was an apartment dweller - I did laudry with some trepidation.

Especially by the looks of some of my neihbors. LOL

There is this stuff that I've been using for a few months called Odor Aid. It's an anti-bacterial spray that you put on your gear after you play. I'm not sure if it works for everyone, but it seems to have taken the stench out of my gloves and skates especially. It's $10 a bottle and lasts for a couple of months. Highly recommend it.
