10K fine for twirling octopus

Note to the NHL: Yes, the NFL is successful, but it's not because they have their fun police working around the clock.

I have tickets to game five and am already planning on throwing an octopus... Whether he swings it or not it still pumps everyone up.

What's the going rate for a good tossin puss?

I am still in the process of checking that out... I do not care too much about price as that is a priceless moment. Anyone know of any punishments to this act?

Can't they throw you out of the arena for throwing something on the ice. It's part of the pregame announcements at the AHL games I've been to...I doubt they enforce that rule in Detroit when it's a octopus though.

I suppose, technically, they could toss you for throwing a hat on the ice after a hat-trick too...

You might wanna wash your hands too...throwing a hat doesn't leave a distinct odour.

The team can be called with a delay of game if a fan throws something on the ice. Rule was amended after the Panthers in 1996.

Kinda overlooked Detroit because they don't throw 100 of them out there. With the Panthers it was delaying the game at least 5 min after the goal was scored.

You would think that someone behind the scenes would have already stepped up and say they would pay the fine. Can you imagine the energy and intensity of the areana if that puss was twirled after Bettman said not to...it would be crazy. If you do one twirl a game it would only be $40k, the players could throw that together easy. It would be worth it just to keep the momentum level high.

THey would be fined for thinking about it or speaking out about it, just like they do if they abuse the officials and their calls in the media.

Bettman sucks and the day he gets fired or quits, (i'm hoping fired) I'm going to throw a huge party and everyone on MSH is invited to celebrate. He's arguably the worst commish in US SPORTS history. He makes Bud Selig seem terrific.

Don't even get me started on the Avery T-shirt he axed cause he has no sense of humor.

The rule is fine...a little ridiculous...but really unneeded.... Joe Louis has a guy DEDICATED to going out and throwing that octopus, it's not like it's some random fan, it's an [temp] employee of the Joe. So the intensity will still be there and no one has to take the wrath of Bettman. I wouldn't want fans to be throwing them all throughout the game because then you're making tradition an annoyance.

Al Sobotka is the rink manager or arena super or Zam driver, something of that sort. He was the one who had the balls to jump out there and grab it quick, so he does it now.

It doesn't seem like all of you read the article. The NHL is specifically targeting Al Sobotka (although they would fine anyone) from twirling the octopi after they are flung to the ice. The reason given by the NHL was, "Because matter flies off the octopus and gets on the ice when he does it."
