Computer question

Recommended Posts

edit: I was having computer troubles but I unplugged it and turned it back on and its fine now. I do have a question tho to anyone with any knowledge. I've heard Norton anti-virus has been making computers slower, and mine is becoming ridiculously slow and if theres any truth to this if it would be wise to get rid of it.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to computers, I think I may had AVG at one point, I just checked I have Lavasoft Ad-aware. I think I may need to check out the AVG again, I just hate when my computers so damn slow

Just for the sake of other possible issues, what are the specs on your computer? If you don't exactly know, google cpuz. Fantastic program that tells you exactly whats in your machine.

I use Norton security suite 2007. I tried the over versions and I didn't like them. New version works great. I do have a nice computer so your mileage may vary.

Core 2 duo e6550 @ 3ghz.

4gb Patriot Viper DDR2 1066mhz

With my old PC with XP I had a lot of problems with Norton. It slowed it down quite a bit and my PC wouldn't shut down right. I currently use Trend Micro anti virus with my new PC running Vista Ultimate with no problems. I would definitely recommend Trend Micro.

AMD Phenom™ X4 9500 Quad-Core

Norton is notorious for taking up insane amounts of RAM. I've been using AVG-Free for years and it's been just as good, if not better, than Norton. I also feel Norton puts too many restrictions on your computer... a little bit TOO safe.

I also recommend AVG on a Windows machine. I haven't had any virus/trojan/exploit problems using the combo of AVG-Free and ZoneAlarm. And I bet Norton would've done a similar job as well too.

Difference is, I used to use Norton and it would embed its control so deep into the system registry that it would sometimes cause problems that made me wish for a virus instead. AVG being free is a good reason to use it, but even if they were the same price, I'd still go with AVG now

Norton's a piece of crap. AVG is free, and superior.

Couldn't agree more.

I strictly use AVG, Spybot S&D, and Lavasoft Ad-Aware.

Me too, but you forgot Firefox ;)

I find with Norton it is ridiculous if you install all 900 degrees of protection. Instead, just install the antivirus only...no anti spam filter, or anti bad things on the internet add on...the anti virus does just fine, but you need to make sure thats all you put in.

Now...with the new version of antivirus and vista business and opening up ports for bit torrent...havnt figured that out yet, nor does there seem to be a light at the end of that tunnel.

It might be a little too safe, but when I come home from working on computers all night, I would rather be able to just use and abuse without the fear of of my emergency pager going off.

amen.

norton is terrible and clogs up the computer. I feel the same about MacAfee.

spybot and ad-aware are great.

Norton is a notorious resource hog. AVG is great, but if I heard correctly, they're phasing out the free model. McAfee isn't half bad but eats up a bit of

resources in its own right.

Updates for the AVG Free are not available after May 31...according to the pop I get every morning.

I've heard it's just no more updates for 7.5 after 2008 and I'm not 100% but I think you can still get updates after that if you switch to the 8.0 free version.

*Currently browsing Google on the subject...

If you can get your hands on Symantec AntiVirus (SAV), then you will notice significant improvements in speed and there's no cost for licensing and definition updates. If you are running WinXP, any version should work for you as I'm running 10.0.2. If you are running Vista then you will need 10.2.X. (last character is revision release). It has all the antivirus features of Norton but doesn't have all the extra crap like content filtering that slows your machine down. If you run SAV 10 along with AdAware or SpySweeper you should be fine.
