Tape on blade tenon

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I think this is a bit of a stupid question, but i need some help. My blade is a little loose in my shaft, so i have tried putting a little tape on the tenon to make the fit more snug. However when i insert the balde the tape catches on the shaft and rolls up, so the blade is still loose.

Is there a technique to keep the tape on the blade?

I ordered a new balde but it hasnt arrived on time and i have 3 games tommorrow so really need to try and fix this.

Thanks in advance

put the tape over the end of the widest part of the hossel allowing for the tape to run towards the bottom of the blade. this should solve your problem and won't cause tape to roll. Hopefully this has helped

Exactly, Put tape on the wide side, over the top of the tenon and back down the other side. It sounds like the original poster is going around and not over the top.

I had a blade and camera handy

I've found the tape will stretch a bit if it's a snug fit, so don't go all the way to the tenon/hosel joint. If you need more tape, I usually tear a piece in half length ways and do the same thing on the narrow side.

Nice, I did a walkthough for doing it back in the old CB days. I was thinking about going through the old pics folder on my server and looking for something similar.

I go all the way, but the tape does stretch... so I cut the excess with a razorblade. I have found with certain shafts that it may still wiggle if you dont make sure to go all the way to the hosel.

You want to use cloth tape, not friction.

Thanks for the help guys. Problem solved. All 3 games played with no looseness of the blade! Thanks

I go down over the hosel and tear off the excess tape when it dries. Per Chadd's recommendation, I'm using less tape and going back to some glue so as not to stretch the shaft too much. Haven't had a problem yet.

Besides the pattern, that's one thing I like about my pro stock dolo blades. They fit in shafts extremely tight. Some of the mission blades needed tape and I try to avoid it when possible.

The old kohos had horrible tenons, too short and too thin.

My biggest problems were with TPS blades. Christian blades, on the other hand, tend to be very thick.

My Christian Torch composites had the thinnest tenons I'd ever seen. The first one was so thin it snapped the first time I used the blade. Second one still looks brand new after a couple months. The wood Christian blade, however, I had to take a rasp file to, and since I was dumb and did it inside without gloves, I got fiberglass all over my hands for a few days.

what can you do when a blade is too big for a shaft?

With wood you can grind it down to make it work. Doesn't work with composite

I was thinking of the woods, I used them a lot more than the comps.

wouldnt that rub the glue off?

You'd want to remove all traces of the glue first. The glue will get on your sandpaper, your rasp, or grinding wheel if not. Grinding wheels are very porous and if too much glue builds up on it they can explode.

My mission pro stocks had to be filed a bit, the tenon had an identical bulge right above the hosel on both Langs. They were composite, but there was no hope of getting them in a shaft without a little work.

That pic I posted was a TPS Omega woody, and IIRC it had tape both ways on it to keep it snug.

How does doing this affect the performance of the stick? I feel like you would lose a lot of power by inserting a soft material like hockey tape in there.

We're talking about one thin strip of tape. Considering the fact that the average player doesn't use the right flex most of the time, a tiny piece of tape is the least of their concerns. The only way you're going to feel it is if you have to use several pieces of tape.
