Grip Tape

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of putting grip tape on my stick right after I got new gloves, but then I heard that it can degrade the palms quicker then normal. Is this true?

That depends really. Because I have worn my palms down faster with the classic clothtape than the red or blue griptape wich has better grip. My palms rub more, if you know what I mean, with clothtape. I guess you could say that the palm MIGHT wear down faster with clothtape if you "move around" your upper hand a lot.

People on this forum have said that Renfrew grip tape doesn't wear down your palms. I use Tacki-mac grips and they definitely are better on your palms than regular cloth tape.

I've used Renfrew cloth tape as well as Renfrew grip tape with my gloves that have digital palms. I don't notice the difference when I'm on the ice. However I noticed with the grip tape it leaves a tacky residue on my palms.

I bought the grip tape just to try it out and I definately won't be buying another roll of it because it's so expensive and regular cloth tape does the job just fine.

The Powerflex tape does give you more grip, but I've found it does wear your palms faster. It might have something to do with how you tape/hold your stick because some say the opposite.

I really like Renfrew Grip Tape. I've been using it for 3 years or so now i dont think it really wears on my palms that badly compared to cloth.

Never tried Powerflex so i have nothing to compare it to though.

I second the tacki-mac grip tape, nice feel/grip with the added bonus of longer palm life.

I've been using blue renfrew grip tape with my NB 4 rolls for a few weeks now and don't even see anything on my palms, my bottom hand shows more wear actually. ive used both off and on and believe if there is a difference, cloth tape wears em down quicker

Unless I'm mistaken, I wouldn't call it "tacki-mac grip tape". It's a one piece grip that you slide onto the shaft. It's not tape.

I've heard mixed feedback on the Powerflex as well... I've been using it for about 4-5 months and I haven't seen any abnormal wear on my palms. I also hold my stick awkwardly when I'm not in possession/playing offense. I do however, use the Powerflex scarcely and I don't use a giant knob either... I tape normally, then do 1 quick wrap with the Powerflex.

Yeah I have a small knob, do one layer of Powerflex, but it did rough up my new palms. On my old digital/goatskin palms, it ripped the middle of the palms as well as the side of the pointer finger.

I seem to get a lot of "tacky residue" from regular renfrew cloth - there's some glue on both sides of the tape which seems to cause this mess

I recall there was some suggestion not so long ago how to deal with this (something along the lines of putting some powder on it or something?!), but I couldn't find it now

any help? I wanted to cut my stick a bit, but am afraid to re-tape again as it's wrecking my palms :(

Sprinkle some baby powder on all four sides, work it into the grip a little bit then give it a good slap or two to get the excess of and your good to go.....I started doing that a couple months ago and it's worked like a charm

At the recommendation of the Plymouth Whalers' equipment manager, I've been using (Renfrew) grip tape for 2 years now. Things I've collected:

My palms used to wear down very quickly with regular white cloth tape. Though this process would wane over time, as the tape would start to get that hardened, smooth, almost glazed-over look and feel.

My palms don't wear down nearly as quick with white Renfrew grip tape.

I've used green and blue Renfrew grip tape as well, neither of which stained my palms. Friends of mine who have used non-Renfrew colored grip tape have had their palms deeply stained in the tape's color.

I've used one non-Renfew grip tape, and found it way too grippy.

Upon buying new gloves with very thin palms, I tried out the Tacki-Mac grips in an attempt to save the palm. While I experienced no wear on the palm, I literally could not move my upper hand around the butt end - toe drags, therefore, were almost impossible. I quickly went back to Renfrew white grip tape.

Edit - I can't recall the one non-Renfrew grip tape I used. I guess my point is that I'll never use any grip tape other than Renfrew.

I agree. I've been using Renfrew grip tape for years and it's great. I find that my gloves wear out faster with regular white cloth tape as well. Another good part is if your knob gets gunky, you just simply unwrap the grip tape and put a new one on.
