Boo, Tiger!

OK, he's a great golfer and has a smokin' hot wife, but he puts down hockey and is a f&@^ing Dodger fan. He is now scum to me. ;)

"Don’t count Tiger Woods among those glued to their TVs during the Stanley Cup finals.

"The world’s top golfer appeared via teleconference on Monday, promoting August’s PGA Championship at Oakland Hills in suburban Detroit.

"Woods was asked if he was rooting for Detroit or Pittsburgh.

"Woods started to laugh, then landed a zinger.

"'I don’t really care. Let’s talk about the Dodgers,' the California native said. 'I don’t think anybody really watches hockey any more.'"

My comment isn't based on this latest news story in anyway. Tiger Woods is a narcissistic, self-serving a**hole. To begin with, he's exceptionally cheap. I've heard more than one report of him stiffing waiters, bellboys etc. Secondly, he's extremely self serving. He never answers any question that in any way could be regarded as controversial. He won't even stick up for minorities in blatant cases of discrimination. And finally, he's not the greatest golfer ever currently. He's had awfully weak competition and has never won a single tournament when trailing entering the final round.

I don't care for golf or Tiger but it's not like he's lying. Seriously, why should anyone be offended by that? I'm glad not many people have a cat when they hear "baseball's boring!"

The only thing interesting about this is that it indicates that Tiger is either incredibly sheltered or not that smart. Doesn't he realize that a tremendous percentage of hockey players are also avid golfers? He just alienated a good share of his natural market.

Hockey is not as popular as NFL,MLB and NBA for sure, even though we all are die hards and can't relate to his comment. I would think a sports figure/athlete

wouldn't knock other sports. There should be some respect given to other sports athletes since all pro athletes ( and golfers) deal with similar issues.

The guy may have a valid point as a factual comment but he's an ass as a pro athlete/ sportsman.

Let him play a pro-am with Happy Gilmore !!

I'd rather have no one watching the Cup finals than turn hockey into what golf has become, a passing fad. When I was a kid nobody under 40 was even mildly interested in golf, in 10 years it'll be that way again.

I'm sure Tiger's management team will be scrambling to issue an apology to the 12 hockey players/golfers who were offended by that quote.

"Until today, Woods's biggest comeback on the PGA Tour was four strokes going into the final round. He came from eight strokes behind to beat Ernie Els in the 1998 Johnnie Walker Classic on the European Tour."

Whether he is narcissistic or self-serving, who knows? He doesn't come across that way in interviews, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have warts.

Regarding his hockey comment, maybe he had a big smile on his face. Maybe he's friends with a couple of NHLers and was just needling them.

My apologies, I meant to say he has never before come from behind to win a major entering the final day. That's well documented.

But, hasn't he also never lost a Major when leading after 3 rounds?

I don't know why any Pro athlete would shoot down another sport like that. Fine, say you aren't a fan, or don't follow it...but don't be a dick about it. The Fraternity of Pro athletes is still a fairly small one...like someone already said...why alienate an entire group of his "peers" like that.

After Ovechkin wins the Hart, he should just say Tiger who? What does he play?

Didn't Ovey go "Tiger who?" after his hole-in-one?

How many majors has he won? Yeah, he sucks. I guess Elway was better than Montana before '97 because Elway won a bunch of games coming from behind.

Tiger avoids controversy most of the time because people tend to over react to what a premier athlete or someone with star power says. If you dont believe me, read the previous posts again. Tiger also enjoys his privacy, oddly enough - I mean it's not that important to have privacy is it? As for the comment about hockey, I'm sure he said it in jest, but even if he didn't does it REALLY matter?

Tiger has never won a major when coming from behind in the final round; so what's the point of bringing that up in this conversation? Why go off on a tangent because of a comment you dont like. Its obvious Tiger is in an elite league that very few can say they're a part of. Say what you will about Tiger, but he's done more for golf and the community than any single hockey player, that I can think of, has done for hockey.

I couldn't give two blanks less about golf. He's a douchebag; you can ask the spectator he cursed out and threatened to physically harm a couple months ago on the golf course. It was a major news story in fact.

BTW, look at the ultra soft competition Tiger has been up against and compare that with some of the greats. Three words sum up this character: Overrated, Selfish, Classless.

Overrated ? No less than Wayne Gretzky has said "He's the greatest athlete I've ever seen". As for the claim that his competition is "weak", this is likely an artifact of his winning so many majors and other tournaments. Everybody else looks bad when Tiger is wiping the floor with them. Does this mean they're really bad, or Tiger is really good ? I'd expect that the overall skill level is much higher in the PGA than it has ever been.

It's amusing that people are taking such deep offense at the perceived slight of their sport. If some hockey player said he didn't think anybody watched synchronized swimming or rhythmic gymnastics, he'd be right for all practical purposes, lots of people would have a chuckle, and none of the readers here would have their panties in a twist about some imaginary disrespect shown towards other athletes.

Say what you want about Tiger, but don't make up facts. Golf as a sport has been in a steady decline for about a decade. Golf rounds played in the United States have dropped each year since 2000. Interesting that the decline of golf seems to correspond with the arrival of Tiger on the scene. The claims about Tiger doing so much for golf are a myth. Here's just one quote on point:

"According to the National Golf Foundation, the number of people playing golf has not risen in any year since 2000, and has fallen from 30 million at the start of the decade to 26 million now."

There has also been a spate of golf courses being sold and redeveloped in recent times. And, golf viewership on television is shrinking. There is a series of articles on this in the Times and various business journals. Maybe some of that is because Tiger is more about himself than he is about the game. I don't know, but the stories would suggest that. Gretzky never struck me that way. What he did for hockey towers over what Tiger has "done" for golf, if you count reducing games played, the reducing development of courses, and reducing television viewership as doing something for the game.

That all makes sense. What does he really do for golf? I mean he does more endorsements and commercials than he does promoting golf. I feel that pro athletes should respect any other sport, I don't understand how someone can be so stupid and small minded. It's not like Tiger ever wins anyways. This has made me not like him at all, as if I didn't care for him before.

Tiger had been on the scene for seven years (three of which were as a famous amateur) before the 13% drop in golfers that began with this decade, so it's equally possible that he had influenced a significant increase in the number of golfers throughout the 90's, many of whom might have quit in the 2000's when they discovered, "Hey, this game isn't as easy as it looks on TV...."

Back to the topic at hand, I can't believe some of you are having such a hard time with Tiger's joke. Is it going to make you want to play the sport less because Tiger joked that nobody's watching????

Wow.

I am a bit floored by some of these comments. Hockey fans all tout how tough they are, or their sport is....but some here start crying like babies because someone said something negative about their sport.

Suck it up and grow a pair please. Or better yet, ignore it.

As far as Tiger goes, he is entitled to his opinion, which isnt far off from the truth. As a spokesperson for many products, it probably isnt wise to talk negatively about anything at all. He is however, without a doubt, an athelete. And not just an athelete, but the type that completely dominates his sport. Like it or not, he is in the same ranks as Jordan, Gretzky, etc.....period.

I just find it ironic that HOCKEY PLAYERS have their panties in a bunch over this. Dont be the same way and bash golf and Tiger. It is a legitimate and difficult sport, and he may be the best golfer ever.

Hockey is my favorite sport, and more people go to Hockey Games on average than NBA games (17k ish, with NHL averaging 5 more).

Hockey is great and relevant....why would a pro golfer, or anyone for that matter, expressing a mildly negative comment on Hockey mean anything at all to any hockey player anywhere?

JMHO

End rant.
