Not sure this merits a topic since the HHOF lost all credibility when they inducted Dick Duff for no reason at all a couple of years back....but Anderson over Gilmour? C'mon.

I can't believe anybody can tell me with a straight face that Glenn Anderson was a better overall hockey player than Doug Gilmour, it's just not true.

498 goals, CLUTCH in the playoffs, and 6 Cups?

Why not?

Maybe not the obvious, can't miss class of last year, but that's 4 solid contributors to hockey going in together. Not just NHL, but Junior and World Hockey as well.

"Veal Scallipini" deserves to be in "The Hall" for sure.

According to ESPN...

Other players eligible for induction this year included Dino Ciccarelli, Pavel Bure, Vincent Damphousse; Doug Gilmour; Phil Housley; Steve Larmer; Rick Middleton; Adam Oates; and Pat Verbeek.

Goalies eligible include Tom Barrasso; Ron Hextall; Mike Liut; Andy Moog; Mike Richter; Rogie Vachon; John Vanbiesbrouck; and Mike Vernon.

For my liking I'd say Bure, Housley, Richter and Hextall would have to be gimmes. I know allot of people will disagree when it comes to Bure, but if you forget all the bad press and think about his abilities and stats on the ice he was pretty amazing.

You're thinking strictly of NHL players though...Consider the International career that Larinov had, the commitment and development Mr. Chynoweth brought to Jr. hockey, an d the career of Scapinello, it's hard to really argue any of them.

With the cap of inductees per year, it's getting hard and harder to make these picks without someone finding faults.

The HHOF has way too many people in the builder category.

Maybe so...but Chynoweth deserves to be there for what he has done for the game. Isn't he the guy that turned the CHL into what it is today?

It's a great business but should they be rewarding someone for running a business a better way? Last year it was a guy who was part of central scouting. He may be a great guy, but not relevant to the vast majority of hockey players, fans or spectators. Nobody should be elected to the hall of fame if someone out there doesn't dream of being the next (insert name here).

Gilmour has 1414 points, ppg+ over 180 playoff games, was arguably the top player in the world for a period of time in the early 1990's, and was one of the best defensive forwards of his era. He won faceoffs, played about 6 inches and 40 pounds bigger than he actually was, killed penalites, ran the power player, was a premier set-up man, and was a fantastic leader and captain. Can you say any of those things about Glenn Anderson?

Put Dougie on those Oilers teams and he wins 5 cups as well. Glenn Anderson had a very very nice career, he was huge in the clutch, and deserves to be in the Hall...but he never reached the heights that Gilmour did.

Out of that list I think I would induct - Ciccarelli, Bure, Gilmour, Barrasso, Hextall, Moog, Richter, and Vachon. Thats my personal pics anyway!

Yes. They Called the Memorial Cup the Ed Chynoweth Memorial Cup.

I'm surprised that Bure was even seriously considered.

Better than a point per game in the regular season and in the playoffs. One of the most explosive offensive players of his era. Better point per game average than either Hull, Neely or Gilmour. Hell in 2000-2001 he scored more than a quarter of his team's goals. Bure deserves to be in the HHOF a lot more than a huge number of guys who are already there.

And which week was that?

You realize that almost described Adam Oates, too.

Case closed right there. "Best player in the world today'. At least I think that's the clip, I don't have audio at work.

And that does almost describe Oates, but I don't think he had the toughness of Gilmour, wasn't as good defensively, and wasn't as good of a leader. FWIW, I'd put Oates right on the bubble, he was a fantastic passer.

Bure should easily be in.

I like Chadd's comment that the only people in the Hall should be those guys who make kids say, "I want to be the next____"....or someone who you'll tell your kids/grandkids about seeing play. Gilmour and Bure both easily fall into those categories in my opinion. Are you really going to be sitting around telling your kids about Glenn Anderson? Adam Oates? Ron Hextall?

You're seriously using Grapes to prove your point? If we were talking about a European or Quebec born player, you might have a point but we all know how much Don loves his Ontario and western boys.

Oates wasn't as good defensively as Gilmour? Well, I guess this conversation really can't go any further until you take the homer glasses off.

I listen to that guy and laugh a lot. Sometimes he makes sense, says the right things. But then he goes on talking about hockey like he played a decade in the game as apposed to one fuckin' game

Actually he played closer to two decades and coached for nearly a third, but why let facts get in the way?

No doubt about it, but when it comes to an Ontario boy playing for his Leafs you have to take anything he says with a grain metric ton of salt.

He played one NHL game, in the playoffs. Coaching is different!

He still played at a high level, starting at a time when the NHL only had six teams and high level minor league hockey was pretty good. And while coaching may be "different" it certainly doesn't mean he knows less about the game. Using your example, Cherry would still have a better idea than Scotty Bowman, who never played a game in the NHL.
