The movie thread

Recommended Posts

It's now summer movie season again and we all know what that means, several $200 million dollar movies with no plot, little editing and no acting or directing. First up is Will Smith's new flick "Hancock". I actually heard a couple people at a Blockbuster discussing this the other day and saying how poorly it was expected to do. I just checked it out via reviews, trailers etc and it looks, well, bad. Critics apparently are nailing it as a big flop. Mike Myers The Love Guru has been the largest bomb thus far, with only $21m in box office receipts despite having a big budget. I'm hoping you'll all post your reviews here, then we can save each other $8.50 and 90 minutes of wasted time...

The worst thing about Hancock was the trailers killing what I assumed was to be a spoiler. Showing Charlize Theron flying around like Storm, throwing tornadoes at him in a fight.

Not meant to be a blockbuster but a bad summer (or any season) movie was The Strangers.

My GF wants to see Love Guru (because it has the Leafs in it). I'll report on it's level of suckiness later today or tomorrow.

Went with the GF this past Thursday. Wow, was I disappointed.

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was forced in that movie. What's wrong with Mike Myers, how lazy is he getting doing movies? And why would a big moviehouse give the money for this waste of film?

Now I know there is going to be disputes over this...but I thought Iron Man was horrible. I heard great things about it and this and this, but when I went to see it it didn't live up to its hype. It could've been way better.

I thought it was a good movie, but I agree that it didn't live up to the hype. Iron Man was good, not great.

Well, what would you have done to improve it....knowing that you have to keep to the mythos that is already established?

Regarding Hancock, it looks like it could be a fun summer movie, although I doubt Will's going to earn an Oscar for it. ;)

From what I've heard of people who've seen it, Iron Man is quite enjoyable but us nerdly few who read the comic books are the one who put it on a pedestal. Rightfully so as I would put it as third, maybe second-best comic book movie ever.

Perhaps I poorly phrased that statement. I'm not saying the movie could have been better, but all the people I talked to that saw the movie before I did (and there were a lot of people) talked about it as if Iron Man was the most amazing movie ever. Again, I thought it was very good and entertaining, and I wouldn't change it.

My point is that maybe I just read into the hype a little too much.

It was solid but not spectacular. Obviously the first act of a multi-story arc, but not an all time great flick.

What comic movies would you have above it? I have Spidey 2 and Superman above it with X2 and BB on the same level.

I actually kind of liked The Strangers. I went in to it with no expectations and it wasn't that bad. Then again I'm not a scary movie type guy. It was way too predictable though.

I had some expectations after the first trailer and it being based on the Manson creepy-crawling, but I just didn't like it. I liked the randomness of the reasoning of it as that was the scariest part, but it was predictable.

If you're comparing it to all movies ever made, I'd agree with that assessment, although I think this movie will hold up fairly well over time. However, I think movies have to be graded on a scale. Was it animated? Was it a comedy? Was it meant for children? Was it based on a book?

For instance, during the second LOTR, I found it laughable how two of the Fellowship ended up outside amongst thousands of Orcs, yet battled their way back to safety in the castle. However, I realized afterward that that was probably how the book was written, so my issue was with J.R. Tolkien and not with Peter Jackson.

That said, I think Iron Man was darn near spectacular....for a comic book movie.
