Improving Flexability

I went to see a orthopedic doctor not too long ago and he said that i was a stiff jointed person and that i should work on increasing my flexabilty. I thaught that was stupid but i guess i should try too anyway. So do any of you people know a way to increase overall flexability in the lower body?

Generally hockey players have very tight hips. Try sitting cross legged while watching TV. If you do it for an hour a day instead of sitting in a chair or lying down it really improves your flexibility.

stretching befor and after workouts helps a lot with flexability. and try holding each stretch anywheres from 20-30 seconds

I went to an orthapedic doctor also. He told me that hockey players commonly have very strong theighs and legs but they are very stiff.

I just do normal stretching, nothing special.

stretching needs to be part of your daily life if you want to improve flex..

when i worked for K2..i was constantly driving long distances..and started stretching quite a bit ...maybe 15min in the AM and 15 in the PM..and it made a world of difference..

i had stretches for my lower back and hamstrings from a chiropractor i had seen that i was doing anyways..but i went and found a book by Bob Anderson called oddly enough STRETCHING..and it worked for me...

i don't drive as much anymore..but i stretch about 10min each day and it keeps me sane..and a bit more pregame ..

I second yoga. Also, I hear Tai Chi does a lot for longevity and health of joints and muscles. It does wonders for all the senior citizens I see doing it. They swear it has given them back the ability to move independantly. Could only help a younger, already healthy person I'd bet.

This guy talks about dynamic stretching, which is what they recommend at Umass Amherst for hockey also. You can do a web search and find all sorts of dynamic stretching exercises for free.

does that really work?

looks expensive.....

i'll try searchin on the net for dynamic stretching exercises first

I think dynamic stretching depends on the person...i get more out of static stretching for the most part..especially the hamstrings...but its definitely worth looking into..

I've seen a few shows on tsn and sportsnet that show pros doing their workouts in the summer and almost everyone they've been doing yoga or some sort of stretching. The gym I go to offers yoga classes, I'm going to look into those so I can hopefully improve my game, and I'm also terribly stiff and can barely touch my toes so it would be nice to be able to do that.

I can't touch my toes, I always thought it was weird. Everybody else who plays hockey that I talked to cant either, exept this one guy whos a little on the fruity side, we didnt ask why.
