Learning A Language

Recommended Posts

So, this summer I am only working part time, and needed something to fill my spare time. I decided that I would try to learn a language. I was surfing ebay and found a couple of things, there were multiple languages, french(which I can partially speak), german, czech, turkish, finnish, and swedish. I figured, hey why not, so I bought the Swedish one. Has anyone else taught themselves a foriegn language, that they have never spoken, or even been to that country. How did you do? Can you still speak it?

I know of a couple of people that have used Rosetta Stoned and have done quite well with it. Granted, both of the people that used it had a 45 minute commute to work everyday, each way.....and used it while in the car. It worked though. ;)

CD's are great. Any Barnes and Noble etc will have a huge section. Workbooks can also be beneficial. After learning any language, if you don't keep using it, you will lose it. It's just like any muscles you've ever built.

Immersion was the best teacher for me learning a new language but I've heard good things about Rosetta Stone.

Immersion was the best teacher for me learning a new language...

Couldn't agree more Mack, my German was terrible for many years (breif lessons at home from Dad and at H school). But when I actually went to Germany/Austria my ability shot through the roof. My vocab trippled in a month and instead of slowly breaking down words and pronouncing them slowly I was able to snap them out like a local. I think I will go back and drag my talented GF with me as well. She'll pick it all up quicker I reckon.

When you're first learning, really pound the vocab! Try to find a group that meets and speaks Swedish, might be kind of hard to find. I'm learning German now, and we have a group called Kaffeestunde. Sounds pretty good, but I haven't gone yet. Once you get some basics, try to read some text on a website in your 2nd language. Keep using it, and try to learn a few new words every day. Also, if you're going to use an online dictionary, see if you can find one that will pronounce the words for you, there are a lot of tricky vowel sounds in Swedish. Good Luck!

Did you find any CD's that teach a guy how to speak "female" ?!?!?!?

I keed, I keed....

What is that supposed to mean?

Thanks Guys, I am going to possibly try the rosetta stone, I saw a commercial for it, the one I found is just basic everyday stuff, hello, bye, numbers, colours etc. Can't wait till I start learning though.

You've never heard those "what she said...what he heard" jokes. "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus"...all that stuff.

Meh, nevermind!

I know of a couple of people that have used Rosetta Stoned

The song by Tool about tripping on acid?

Actually my favorite song from that album. Earlier tool (Undertow, Aenema) I still think are better, but Maynard's side project with APC was good enough for me to see them in concert and it was a fantastic show.

I'm partial to Vicarious on 10,000 days, but that song along with Lost Keys is an awesome way to spend 15 minutes.

Immersion is by far and away your best bet.

I needed to throw in one elective this year, so I took Ukrainian. Was progressing pretty slowly with the course. I asked my Mom (who is a fluent, native speaker) how she could help me learn. That was near the end of September. I'm pretty certain she didn't speak another word of english to me untill Christmas time.

I picked it up way faster than my classmates
