Girdles

Recommended Posts

I'm mainly a roller player that's looking to switch to mainly ice so please forgive my elementary questions, but do most of you guys wear the girdles with a shell?

I hope you mean ice girdles, not inline girdles. If so, then yes.

I was headed towards the Tackla girdle then found these xxxx's and am very interested in the protection.

I will be trying on the one90 and XXXXCore tonight at my LHS before a session. I am looking to go to a better set up (girdle/shell) than my vapor lite XV. want better protection and mobility. Just not sure which will be better.

Tried on the xxxx core pad tonight. Didnt like it. Seemed too bulky and not mobile. First girdle I ahve tried, as they didnt have any others, but the LHS guy said he loved his one90s, and that he is a defenseman and blocks shots all the time. Are the one90s protective enough? Are they more protective than my vapor lite XV pants?

One more question. Is there any real difference with protection, mobility, or durability between the one90 girdle/shell, and the one90 pant?

I have the One90 girdle. Very comfortable, very mobile. Couldn't ask for anything more in those departments, and the versatility factor (being able to mix and match shells) worked well given I played on three different teams over the last year.

However, that comes with a major drawback, which is protection. I too play D, and there were times when blocking shots that I felt a little wary. There are definitely places were all you are guarded by is a thin layer of foam that leaves much to be desired. Given my playing style/level, something I wouldn't buy again, but for a forward who wants mobility and comfort, a great girdle.

As stated earlier... the One90 pants are very protective and pretty mobile for a pant. I haven't played with the One90 girdle so I can't tell you about that but my experience with girdles is that they never have the same amount of protection as a pant.

What Nike/Bauer pant has the equivalent protection of the 0ne90 girdle?

I have the Vapor Lite XV. Is it better/worse?

And is the mobility THAT much better, especially for a defenseman in a C league that blocks shots and doesnt feel any lack of mobility in current pants?

Also, I think I will never have anything other than black gloves/pants/helmet as it goes with any uniform....so changing shells isnt that important.

Hmmm...perhaps I am making my decision for me....maybe pants it is.

So if it is pants, what are the best pants out there for protection/mobility/weight.....is it the one90????

Pants will have more protection than girdles because there aren't any gaps in protection. If you're blocking shots, stay with a pant. Me, on the other hand, hasn't worn a pant in 15 yrs.

Is there a short list of GREAT pants?

Looking for a good balance of protection/mobility/weight.....but not too bulky.

I have the Vapor XV Lite, so I am looking for more protection than those, but the mobility, size, and weight seem good.

No experience with any of the NBH stuff, but I've tried on Tackla, CCM, Itech, Protex, and Graf pants (used the Itech, Tackla, and Protex in actual game play) and have settled on the Tackla 951 (got 'em up in Canada). You may want to look at some of the higher end Tackla models.

I've had a couple pair of NBH (well, just Bauer at the time) pro stock pants, and I don't think I'll ever be able to wear anything else. I played D in college and blocked many a shot off all parts of my thighs, and the padding is unreal. I've also never had a problem with mobility, and I tried a girdle for like 3 weeks and found it to be way too hot. I know there's a difference between the "Euro cut" and the "North American cut." and my pants are "North American cut" in that the legs are a bit shorter and looser. Tackla, and possibly Graf too, go with the "Euro cut" style, so I think the first thing to do is figure out what fit you prefer. I'd think the Vapor XV would be cut like the Bauer pants I have, so if you want to stay that route and up the protection, I'd say go with the One90 pant or a NBH pro stock pant.

No experience with Graph, CCM or RBK though, but my team wore Tackla in high school and I definitely prefer the NBH to those.

Hope this helps!

Anyone have any updates on the XXXX core pad? I currently have the ONE90 girdle and was thinking about getting the core pad. Thanks guys!

Coming from the Tackala Air 9000. I love mine. Mobility is amazing and the protection seems to be there as I play D.

I came from the Tackla Pro 5000X pants and absolutely love my CCM Pro Girdle. This girdle is a bid more protective than the One90, Synergy, and Tackla's Girdle Setups. The XXXX does look bulkier however. Also, I stayed with a Tackla shell.

I too, like JR, have worn girdles for most of my hockey life...now going on 25 years.

Vapor XXXX - I have skated twice in the girdle. It is a little bulkier on top near the hips than most, but has one VERY major improvement...the tailbone protection. Most girdles suck in this department. It is nice to have a girdle that feels like a pant in that area. Another interesting enhancement of the XXXX is the package area. Most girdles interfere with the cup area or overlap in that space. In the XXXX, it is cut out...to fit perfectly with a cup. Guys who don't like to wear cups...this is not your girdle...it leaves the Johnson WAY too exposed.

One90 - Wore it most of last year in my travel bag. I am not a big fan of it. First, the tailbone protection and the front stomach pad shift constantly, leaving those areas exposed. I did not find it all that comfortable.

Bauer MBP - Going old school here. I have a pair from the hockeyworld basement dweller sale. I started with that way back with the first techniflex girdle back in the day (1992). It is still my favorite for all around protection and comfort...but no longer available.

If choosing between the One90 and the XXXX, my experience has been much better with the XXXX.

After using the XXXX core pad for about a month and coming from the ONE90 girdle, I can say the core pad is a huge improvement. It adds much more protection, pretty much to level of pants, without sacrificing any mobility or comfort. At first it was a bit weird since the ONE90 is pretty much bare bones in size and weight, but after you get used to the core pad being a little bulkier (still not bulky at all in my book, it just seems so compared to the ONE90) it is money!

I've taken some hits and pucks in the tailbone and hip in my ONE90, but the hip and tailbone protection of the XXXX blows any other girdles out of the water. A really nice part of the tailbone protection is that there is a strap on each side right around the waist that allows you to make the pad that comes above the girdle on your tailbone tighter or looser depending on how you like to wear it. My favorite part is the 3 piece hip guard. When you bend to either side or are in stride it moves nice and smooth right with you. Since each pad gets smaller going up, they can slide inside each other allowing easy movement.

The only weird part is how my shell fits. I have the VaporLite shell and it seems to go a good inch or two past the bottom of the girdle, I'm not sure if the XXXX is shorter then the ONE90 or if the shell just doesn't go up as high on the waist cause of the protection. The XXXX is usually pictured with the plain Vapor shell, not sure if there is a difference in fit or just the stripes down the back and logos.

In conclusion, the XXXX Core Pad is great. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a little more protection than a typical girdle or just looking for a girdle in general. Even if you have always worn pants it's still worth a try. It's $20 more then the ONE90, but well worth it.

Let me know if you guys have any questions.

You dont find that if you are wearing that core pad, you are basically wearing pants so why not just get pants? I mean, I can see it being good if you are on a few diff teams, like pants, and switch shells, but as a girdle it seems like overkill (going by why everyone that I know of buys girdles is due to the minimalism of them)?

I don't feel like I'm wearing pants, the protection level is just much closer to pants. It still feels 100% like a girdle when it comes to mobility, weight, and comfort.

I found the XXXX core pad to be pretty restrictive when I tried it on. Does it move alot more freely when it is broken in?
