Custom Insole Thickness

Recommended Posts

I have a question regarding custom insoles. How thick are the Superfeet and other Sidas custom insoles? I have a high arch that I am trying to support and have tried a pair Shock Doctor insoles in my Graf 705s, but they gave me horrible lace bite. My skates are on the small side (2 to 2.5 sizes below my shoes) so there isn't much extra room, especially in the heel and toe. I did like the extra support that the shock doctor insoles gave me. When I went back to the old Graf ones, it felt like the skates buckeled a little when I tried to make real sharp turns. It was like I was loosing my edge, but the skates were plenty sharp and the ice was nice. I would hate to buy new skates just to go up a half size to support my arch.

i'm on my second pair of Superfeet insoles and can't skate without them. they don't add too much volume to the skate, either. i like a really snug-fitting skate, with my heel locked down and my toes brushing the toecap, so i know where you're coming from in regards to the volume issue, but i don't think you'll have too much of a problem with Superfeet Gray (now yellow, and uselessly perforated). if possible, i'd re-bake your skates with the new insoles in as well.

Sounds like you need the support of the insole...but I wouldn't go up in size to get them in their. You may need a deeper skate as opposed to a longer one.

I've got the Graf (Sidas) custom heat moldable footbeds..I previously used the $30 Graf pre-molded footbeds which are similar to SuperFeet..They worked out great, but I thought, "if I can do even better why not?" I have high arches myself and previously experieced foot pain on a consistent basis no matter how comfortable my skate was. The custom moldable footbeds are pretty nice and in theory do not take up as much volume as the Superfeet etc due to the less padding in the heel section. Apparently the theory is to support the arches and mold to your feet, while locking in the heel properly into the boot. I've never experienced any lace bite or support issues in my Supremes with these foot beds and I have a high instep/arch issue.. For $80 I think it is a pretty good value..You should check it out

I love Superfeet, and I hope I don't sound like an infomercial. I know that using it adds some height, therefore takes away some depth. I've been told it's very small increase, about 1/8" or less vs the stock insoles. However, Superfeet for skates are designed for a mid to low arch, but you can use them for any type of arch, I have a high arch but they're great.

Before I used them, my skating and balance weren't that great because of the support I was lacking. With the Superfeet, I have better balance and skating stability because it helps support my heel and arch better than the stock insoles. HUGE difference. But since I've been using them, my skate has been tighter now because of the extra space needed for the insole, and I had to live with a small volume. BUT, my skates have barely enough depth in the first place. Hence why I'm getting a new pair of One95.

Your problem may not be with the insoles. You may have to pick up a skate with more depth like Jordan said. Perhaps using the 709, but in a narrower width (if you have a normal foot width) to help compensate for the insole plus with your high arch/instep. Or you can try to heat mold your skates again with the insole in them.

I ordered a pair of Superfeet insoles, so I will give them a try. I definitely think that there are some fit issues with the skates, but hopefully I can over come them. I probably tried on about 12 different pairs of skates the other weekend including most of the Graf line, RBK, Bauer Vapor and Supremes, and CCM. The only one that gave even close to heel lock of my 705's were the RBK, but I really disliked the pump. It was like I could feel the air moving from one side to the other and the skate wasn't as stiff. Coming from smaller skates, the toe box felt really wide in the Bauer and CCMs and it seemed like I might have a difficult time controlling the toe of the blade.

I was sized up for a 10.5 narrow and currently have a 10 wide, so this could be the underlying problem. If I stand on the insoles out of the skates, you can't see the toe of it. The store was going to order a pair of G7's which the sales guy was pretty sure would be the solution. I am really making them work for their money. I also understand why no store want to carry the full Graf line.

Having looked at both the superfeet and the graf insole side by side I would say that the superfeet are definitely going to take up more volume in the arch area of the skate than the graf insole. The superfoot arch is built up with extra material, whereas the graf arch is built by molding the footbed to your foot, the extra material is what would account for the additional reduction in volume.

I have the yellow superfeet. It appears they are the same as the grey with holes in the middle. They are also wider, I needed to trim the toes down to get them to fit.

While in MI, I saw some horrendous Graf/Sidas jobs that absolutely killed the fit of the skate.

Thats why only 2 shops in the entire Twin Cities do such work..Only qualified personnel should be doing such intricate work..I've had them done in my football cleats and these are much better...For $80 this was a steal..Who was doing the work in MI?

Hmm....I wonder if they fit in all skates or if some are too narrow......?

the molded heel is seems to be the same size as that of the gray superfeet, so it'll fit the same, but the foam at the forefoot is definitely wider and will likely have to be trimmed to fit. i know that the old superfeet gray had a tendency to be a little narrow for wider-fitting skates.

So who else carries the Sidas insoles in the twin cities other than General Sports? They are the ones that were really helpful with trying to size me up, just didn't have my size in everything.

Sports Diamond is another one, but they're down in Lakeville..You need skates or couldnt find soles in your size?? You need not to buy your skates and insoles at the same place...If you're just looking for skates, try SportsWorld USA in Eden Prairie..Its off Hwy 5 and Eden Prairie Rd next to Kowalski's Market..You could also try Dave's Sport Shop in Fridley, but I was told the only 2 places in the Twin Cities that do custom hockey footbeds are General Sports and SportsDiamond..

I am going to try the Superfeet insoles and if they won't work, I am going to try for either the Sidas insoles or new skates. They sales guy at General Sports thought that Sidas insoles would probably give me lace bite, if I was having it with the Shock Doctor insoles. I will probably go back there first with my skates to see what they can do, since were really helpful. Only problem was that they didn't have everything in my size, so then I might head to Sports Diamond and Sports World. My last customer experiences at Strauss and Westwood left something to be desired. When I was living in Madison, WI there was one store to go to for sharpening and equipment (Middleton Cycle). Since moving to the cities I have had a hard time. I have had about a half dozen bad sharpenings from a variety of places along with a few other bad experiences. I have had decent luck at Boehms for sharpening, but they don't carry much for equipment. Thanks for the help.

but i don't think you'll have too much of a problem with Superfeet Gray (now yellow, and uselessly perforated).

Why do you say the perforations are useless? I'm curious, because I've used the grey ones in my 8090s and was going to get a pair of the new yellow ones for my One95s.

IMO, the small diamond perforation pattern on the new Yellow Superfeet is much to small to actually make a significant difference. Now, if the perforations were spread all over the insole, including the plastic heelpiece (without being affecting rigidity or durability), then the new insoles would be a bigger deal. I love my Superfeet Gray, and will continue to use Superfeet products, but I feel like they only really updated the colour to be more eye-catching for customers. Think of it - when you've got bright yellow insoles in your skates, they guy next to you in the locker room will say "ooooh, what are those," and might wanna pick up a pair for himself. Marketing, I say.

The perforations line up with all of the skates that have holes in their outsoles. Not only that, it is a better-fitting insole (skate-wise)

JR, I just went to the site and saw this. Wider forefoot, narrow heel, diamond venting.

It does sound like it will fit the S15 almost if not PERFECT !!

Well, I don't know anything about their insoles, but their undergear is a 100% UA ripoff - they literally cut and pasted the description right from the Under Armor web site - it even calls the material "UA Tech".

I am going to assume those are the same as these --> sole slim sport

I was not impressed as far as use in skates go. I have been very happy with my Superfeet.

I've found that my custom heat moldable Graf (sidas) insoles take up less space in my skates than my pre-molded Graf (Sidas) insoles and my SuperFeet/Shock Doctor insoles as well.
