Custom Painted Guitar

Recommended Posts

I am considering getting a Gibson SG guitar in Black and having it repainted (not a fan of any of the finishes they offer). Of course im not going to be doin the painting on my own, and i was wondering if anyone might have an idea as to how much something like this would cost. Any ideas as to what i could have painted on it would be appreciated, im going for a TieDie thing but other ideas that are similiar would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Actually thats where i got the idea from! i love Claptons' SG but i wanna have somethin thats unique, like a signature. Not that i wouldnt want the Fool... I do want somethin kinda like that but that hasnt been totally done before. The whole thing came up when my band and i wer runnin thru a cover of Sunshine of Your Love (the Cream song) so the entire thing is inspired by Clapton.

Really not a fan of any of the finishes they have??? When I saw the SG in Natural Burst... I knew I had to have it. I know they discontinued the Elegant series (I think that's what they were called) SG's... have you considered custom shop? Those "Lavaburst", and "Emeraldburst", "Fireburst" ones looked amazing.

Oh, the Elegants ARE amazing. I just dont have enough Cash for that and i just think id make an ass of myself tryin to play a guitar that i KNOW i dont deserve. And its not that the Finishes are bad its just that the Black is too original, (besides,my bro has 2 black guitars,SG-3 and a Strat, that i can borrow anytime) and the Natural Burst just doesnt really suit me, dont even mention the Cherry it just makes me wanna puke! the only custom i like is the SG Custom, the one that says LesPaul, its really nice but it is almost the same guitar as the SG-3 except in white! and ive got an SG-3 already, no point in havin 2 of the same guitar. Plus tiedie just looks sick! I was considerin the Les Paul route but theyre just too damn heavy, and the only real nice one is the Custom with Maple Fretboard but id still have to get it ReFinished cuz the natural is gross. theres just so many damn choices! Any other ideas for my new guitar would be appreciated!

You are going to pay a decent amount for someone to do something totally custom as opposed to a standard color. I had a bass refinished about 10 years ago and it was $200 then for a solid color. You are probably going to approach well over $500 I would think, depending on the complexity of the design you are after.

Have you considered getting a guitar with a base color that you like and then having it pinstriped? Here is a linkto several examples. Pinstriping is very hot right now, but has a history and legitimacy to it. And there are so many styles that you should be able to come up with something very original and suited to your personal style. And pinstriping is hand done so each piece is very unique.

A clear coat over top would make it last or you could leave it uncoated and let the striping wear for a vintage look.

Actually that pinstriping is pretty sick! Thanks for that idea, i might try that. Keepin in mind i play guitar in a Bluesy Rock band, (the hardest thing we play is N.I.B. by Black Sabbath). We play a lot of Black Crowes or Zeppelin style rock so i cant anythin to Radical like an Explorer. How about just gettin highlighted accents on the edges, like gold or red bevels.

How about offwhite with black bullseye circles?

Or red with black and white random stripes?

Camo?

hmm.... I know... make it black. so black that there are none more black.

seriously, though. Just don't make it too small detailed and busy. Otherwise, from the back of the gig, it looks like a mess.

You could always mess around with this: http://www.nymphusa.com/kisekae/kisekaeE1.asp to find a base color you like. I monkey with this thing daily, as well as this drum building program.

Also, my personal favorite paint idea is a burst of sorts, but no black involved. For instance (most people hate this - I don't) a green burst. Affectionately titled ShrekBurst by my GML friends.

I always thought Kiefer Sutherland painted a really cool SG design:

Not even the hand so much as the colors.

Im gonna prolly take it to a pro Airbrusher of course (i sure as hell aint doin it myself). I just really want somethin random that makes people say "what the hell...". Nothin to intricate, just a couple of colors in a basic design.

Idk, custom paint jobs aren't that hard unless you're going for a highly detailed piece.

I prolly could paint it myself but id worry so much about screwin it up! Im thinkin about havin somethin kinda like Zack Wyldes Bullsye except with Silver/Grey and havin it fade evertime it rebounds so that the center is just pitch black.
