What's wrong with this shaft/blade?

Recommended Posts

So I've had an intermediate Dolomite shaft paired with a senior Fedorov blade for about 6 or 7 months. It's been fine for that time. I had a scrimmage yesterday, but up until that point, I didn't notice anything wrong. After that, I looked at where my shaft and blade meet, and it's looking a bit weird.

What's going on here? The guy at my LHS said he'd never seen it before and I want to make sure nothing's gonna break on me immediately.

Yeah, that's gonna break...might be soon, might not be. I'd start looking to get the shaft replaced asap. Try looking for an INT blade, or get a SR/SR combo. And be Careful when inserting the blade, Don't Overheat the shaft, and don't press the blade too hard into the shaft.

Edit* Read the OP wrong

Botom of the shaft blew out apparently.

Usually that happens when the shaft is overheated when the blade is put in. There are other causes, but that's the most common.

That's no good. If you keep playing with the combo as is, it'll just continue to crack and eventually come apart completely. I would cut off the damaged part of the shaft and put the blade back in.

You should just be able to cut that bottom tapered out piece off and re-insert the blade. If you keep playing with it like that it will keep cracking up the shaft.

So basically I'm out a shaft? Even if I attempt to cut off the frayed parts it'll still break or it won't even fit?

Those things are expensive:(

By the way, I'm not doing the inserting of the blade. My LHS does it. Could it be their fault? (For future reference, not so I can sue them)

As long as you cut the frayed/cracked area of the shaft and don't overheat or jam the blade in to hard, you should be fine. It looks like the crack hasn't gone up to far yet, so the blade should still fit in. If its loose try some tape on the hosel. Its not an ideal situation, but you won't have to buy a new stick straight away.

This happened to me before and all i did was took the blade out and cut the fraying part of the shaft. Then re inserted the blade carefully and made sure its wasn't loose... And i never had a problem after that sometimes its just the end thats brittle. The inch or half inch you cut off shouldn't make too too much of a difference as far as performance but you may need to insert a little plug in the top part of the shaft.

You may want to use a piece of tape to shim the blade if it's loose. Make sure that when you put it in and the shaft has cooled (after about 5 minutes), there's no movement or play. It should go in kind of tight when it's hot and fit very snug when cold.

For next time i would buy a heat gun at a hardware store (many are less than $30) and do it yourself. This way you can be sure not to overheat the shaft or the blade.

You're going to have to cut a bit of that dead horse off before you start beating it, heating it and inserting things into it.

No need to buy a heat gun when you've got a stove IMO.
