troy 12 Report post Posted September 15, 2008 My brother knows of a few kids at Penn State who did it pretty consistently, I haven't met anyone here that's considering it. I can't imagine it'd be any better or worse than getting blood drawn. Or maybe you could just sell some gear for extra cash haha.
kovalchuk71 212 Report post Posted September 15, 2008 Not looking like its worth it the more I read. It was just an idea I saw locally.
pantherfan 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2008 Mehhh, from what I hear they can extract plasma from your blood if you do plain ol' blood anyway. It's a good idea and karma may pay you back in college girls. ;)
mack 44 Report post Posted September 15, 2008 I knew a girl who would do it and she never seemed to have any after effects of it. Not sure how much she got, but it must have been enough to make it a regular thing as she wasn't a junkie.
Rustpot 1 Report post Posted September 15, 2008 They take your blood, put it in a centrifuge, give you the red blood cells back, wait half an hour (I think), do it again. It changes the time frame of which you can donate (I forget if it's less or more between donations), and I hear it also leaves you pretty drained out for a day or so. The can take twice as much if they give you back the red stuff, so they really get you emptied out. I think recovery time is a lot faster since your body can resupply the plasma faster than red blood cells. The plasma is a "neutral" part of blood that has no typing and can be administered much more readily to patients needing it without worrying about A/B/O or +/-. I don't remember the details, obviously, but call the red cross or talk to the people at the blood mobile when/if you go.

Not sure how much she got, but it must have been enough to make it a regular thing as she wasn't a junkie. My buddy did it for a while (over a year) and he went twice a week ($20 first visit, $30 for second). He said it took about 1.5 hrs total and he felt fine afterwards. The times available and his schedule made him stop.... Side Note if it matters : He also said they were going to be giving pre-paid cards instead of cash
JR97 2 Report post Posted September 15, 2008 What shape you're in also helps determine how much you can spare, the quality, and your recovery. At one point, I was in marathon shape and told I had either excellent amounts or quality for donating or selling. I never really took advantage for either karma or cash. I'd rather donate sperm, but there aren't any takers wife included.
Neal 41 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 I've done it and I found the sensation of the non-plasma part of my blood coming back into my veins very uncomfortable. Its cool and feels very odd. I found it much more unpleasant than giving blood the usual way.

I found it much more unpleasant than giving blood the usual way. That's because the RBC's have cooled to ambient air temperature and you notice the drastic difference between your body temp and the ambient air. If you're really looking for $ look into the local teaching hosital and see if they're running any studies,etc...I used to do this and would make great $. Did a nerve block study which got uncomfortable at times, and a diuretic study seeing which drug made you piss more. Made $300 in 2 months.

Hooah4 12 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 Sounds interesting Hooah, go to the Medical school building? You need to find out if they have a research department at the hospital. From there you can inquire if they're looking for people for clinical studies. The only limitation is when they're looking for a demographic. You may even see ads in the newspaper.
