stick wax

For all the people who use wax on their blade, is there a difference between the wax that you buy from hockey stores, or just using wax from a candle. Personally i just use wax from a candle and it doesn't seem any diferrent from when i used the stuff you buy.

I have found that the biggest difference would probably just be the consistancy of the wax. The actual "stick wax" (Mr. Zog's Sex Wax, Easton "Top Shelf" stuff, Snap Wax) are usually alot softer in comparison to candle wax. I don't melt the wax into the tape the way alot of my friends do; I just rub it on so it completely covers the tape. I have found that Mr. Zog's works the best as far as keeping snow from sticking and prolonging the life of the tape (I rarely have to switch sticks mid-game because of the tape being cut or fraying). However, I ran out of the stuff awhile ago and haven't bothered to order more. I have been using the Easton stuff of-late, and it works pretty well. But it smells like lip-gloss and sometimes gives me a headache when I am taping/waxing.

i usually use some extra surf/bodyboarding wax i have lying around here. I found BZ Spax wax to work the best. And it has a nice scent too.. ^_^

Ive found that the stuff that works best is either a crayon or even better cutting a puck in half and on the cut side rubbing it all over the tape, its easier if u use white tape and just make it completely black, i guess the rubber seals it.

that gives me a question- is there an amount of stickiness of ur stick such that it is illegal? much like nfl recievers cant use sticky stuff on their gloves? cause it seems kinda cheap to have like glue on ur stick so the puck sticks to it.

I've used Zogs most of my life and it works well. I did recently finally try our Top Shelf wax and I must say, I'm pretty impressed. My tape really seems to be hangin in there. I love the pina colada smell too. If I didn't think it'd be uncomfortable and bead up under my arms, I'd use it as deodorant too! Hahaha.

after using all the stick waxes in pro shops i found the candle stick wax to be the best. it doesnt glob on like the other crap and it resists water like the other waxes.

I was never a fan of top shelf, even before it was an Easton product. It always came off in globs and chunks, more so than Zogs.

I use KUU snowboarding wax right now cause i'm too poor to afford some icewax. But today was the first time I tried melting it and letting the cloth tape soak it up and then kept on applying and heating until it was a bit shiny.

i use ski wax, its designed for cold temps so it works well, and keeps the tape on pretty well too. i still have to retape my blade between periods a lot, but it lasts a bit longer.

Sorry to bring up an older topic, but:

Which stick wax is stickiest?

I just started waxing the tape on my blades, and I like using stickier wax there. I have been using some of my team-mates' wax. However, these are mostly the pink, green, beige, and blue puck-shaped pieces of wax, and because they lost the stickers, we don't know which brands they are.

There is one, "Ice Wax", that comes in a container that looks like a solid deodorant's. It is pretty sticky, but not as sticky as some of the others that I have tried out.

I have also tried parafin and candle wax, and they are not as sticky.
