havent been able to find an article.. but good god. Bern looked good, but this just goes to show the Huge difference between a Swiss team and an NHL team. it looked like that scene out of Miracle where the US play the USSR in MSG, except Bern was the US and NYR were the commies.

Tomorrow NYR plays Magnitogorsk (SP?) where there is more pressure than most can see, it is literally NHL Vs. KHL, NYR has more pressure on them then most think. dignity is on the line.. if the russians win, it wont make the nhl look good IMO..

so i just got back from the metallurg NYR game, and it was quite interesting both gear wise (being a MSH member) and hockey wise. in the first period the russians were a far better looking team, they took the early lead and dominated most of the game. NYR didnt come on until the 3rd period, when they tied it 3-3 after being down 3-0. Lundqvist was average. i wasnt impressed with Roszival and thought he got too much ice for the little he contributed. anyways. with 20 seconds left the commies wanted to go D to D, except callahan intercepted the pass went in on a break away, giving the rangers their victory, crowning them the first Victoria Cup winner. Will upload pics on saturday, theyre on my phone... and to answer chadd, they were NHL refs.

I watched a stream - surprisingly hard-fought game, once Drury got into it. As the game wen ton, the Rangers really started to figure out MM's patterns and pick them apart. Callahan's game-winning steal was visible a mile away.

Can somone please tell me why the rangers had the shot at the victoria cup and no other NHL team.. I am a rangers fan so its fine with me, but i would think the redwings would get the oppertunity being they are the NHL champs and Magnitogorsk is the KHL champions

My theory is that if the Red Wings lose, then there a good argument that the KHL is the more competative league, people lose interest, players are more tempted to leave and so on.

That, and the Rangers are the epitome of America. Big Apple, Red White and Blue, Statue of Liberty type of America.

i actually read in the pre game booklet thing that NYR played because they had the longes t history of playing games in europe. out of something like 142 games that an nhl team has played over seas either against another nhl team or against a european team, NYR was involved in 97 of them..

callahans goal was nice, but very careless on the part of russian defending. it seemed to me that drury wanted to win the most on the rangers. he was taking most of the shots, and did what he could to try to set up the goals. it was a very hard fought game by him. NYR just basically owned Bern. all the people who were saying that the swiss league and nhl are very similar are re thinking that sentance. one of the nicest goals i saw was when the D for NYR faked a shot, and toe dragged it passed not one, but 2 diving forwards, trying to block the shot.

The goalie for Metallurg Mezin had some next level saves. Good game all around, it looked like the Rangers couldn't figure out their positioning for periods one and two.

one of the nicest goals i saw was when the D for NYR faked a shot, and toe dragged it passed not one, but 2 diving forwards, trying to block the shot.

That was Brandon Dubinsky, he's actually a center. It was an awesome goal though, he made the two Bern players and the goalie look foolish.

I think Adam is referring to a play by Brian Fahey where he faked the shot and dragged it around the player who dropped to block the shot.

Later, Dubinsky had an amazing goal where he dragged it around several players and finally the goalie to score.

I saw both games on MSG here in NYC. That SC Bern game was a joke. The Rangers wern't playing hard at all. In the third, it was more that SC Bern just couldn't keep up with the Rangers anymore and the Rangers poured it on.

The MM game was crazy. I thought the Rangers were going to lose after they were down 3-0 but Drury willed them to victory. Plus, the Rangers dominated the third period. It wan't even close, the Rangers imposed their will on the Russians and they just couldn't do anything about it.

The way I see it, the NHL is still the better league. The Rangers won for pride, and MM lost even though their owner was dangling $100,000 for each player if they won.
