Alexei Cherepanov passes away

Recommended Posts

it wasn't Jagr or anyone that collided with him....

he was on the bench and collapsed.....it wasn't as a result of any specific incident during the game...he had a heart attack on the bench

Russian internet source reports that he was involved in an accidental collision with a teammate and rumor is that it was jaromir jagrs elbow that he ran into.

Edit to add....Translated Russian Source

and their coach says different on TSN....

msk head coach, Wayne Fleming said Cherepanov collapsed on the bench during the third period of the game and did not see anything that happened on the ice that may have contributed to it.

Fleming also said medical authorities tried to get Cherepanov's heart beating again after it had stopped.

i think i'll believe TSN over some Russian site looking to start ridiculous rumors...

That is fine, news is all about information and how fast you can get it, a source in Russia you might see as more shady, but its also possible that since they are a lot closer to the incident they could have better information.

Son, just because the coach didn't see it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

ok....if you look at that site that was linked, it's now been updated to read nothing of the sorts....

i read the report.....Jagr standing over him asking him to wake up with tears in his eyes?....ummm....a bit conflicting, isn't it....and i hate to break it to anyone who thinks that a young man could die as a result of a collision like that...it's almost near impossible....

he was on the bench, had a heart attack and collapsed...

Really?

It happens a couple times a year in little league.

It has also happened a couple of times in youth hockey. It was the reason that a lot of the companyies started putting and marketing heart protection in their shoulder pads.

Three things. First, it would be very inaccurate and oversimplistic to call what happened a "heart attack." Second, defibrillation is only effective in certain heart rhythms. Third, this is possibly something that could have been detected by an EKG. Of course, this is all conjecture as it remains to be seen what the underlying cause of his cardiac arrest was.

I'm in such shock right now I can't believe it. Alexei had become one of my favorite players over the past few years and I loved watching whatever footage I could of him from RSL/KHL and World Jrs media. I couldn't wait for him to come overseas so I could finally see him play in person. It is such a huge loss, he was really beginning to come into his own, was playing on a team with his favorite player and had just been selected to the Russian National Team. My heart goes out to his family, team, everyone around him.

If the collision with Jagr aspect is true I really hope it doesn't sideline Jagr for too long or lead to his retirement, etc. I can't imagine how devastated he must feel.

RIP Alexei.

I saw his picture on TSN.ca before I saw the headline, and thought maybe they had a transfer agreement and he is coming over here. My jaw dropped when I read the article.

Sad.

When Andrei Kostitsyn was drafted by the Habs, he had a history of seizures. When he came to NA for his first camp, it was found that he had a minor condition that was not being properly treated. The Habs doctors changed his meds and he has been fine ever since...

I can't help but wonder if Alexei had a heart condition, it might have been found/treated if he had come to NA by now.

Just a thought.

Interesting thought. The first thing that comes into mind after hearing that is David Carle and how they discovered his heart condition at the draft combine.

I just watched his last shift and them attending to him. Wow. They didn't have a stretcher - they carried him off the bench and into the locker room.

It's so brutal watching the last shift clip and then the footage of him on the bench - you hear "Welcome to the Jungle" begin at the end of the shift footage and the song is still at the intro of the song on the bench footage... he must have collapsed right at the end of the shift video.

Kinda weird that the arena keeps blaring the AC/DC and whatever while a man is dying on the bench. Although they probably didn't know the severity of the situation, they tend to get subdued in the rink/stadium in NA when there is a major injury delay, out of respect for what could happen.
