Is "Gear" Tape Still Comp-O-Stik?

Recommended Posts

Looking for some more durable tape than the Andover everyone carries around here. I tried Jaybird and found it much better than Andover and Renfrew, but nobody around here carries it. Does Hockey Giant still sell Comp-o-stik tape under the Gear brand?

Fantastic, I'm picking some up tonight.

How's their clear? I liked Andover, but the plastic smell is awful, like burning electrical devices in a bathroom.

Interesting thing,

I went to two different shops recently to buy black cloth tape, and both shops switched from Andover to Comp-O-Stik. When I asked about it, they said Andover's been having a lot of problems with their quality. Sounds like the Comp-O-Stik reps are making the rounds.

I have no idea if they're the same or not, but the Comp-O-Stik stuff seems a little darker and thinner than the Gear stuff from HG, maybe different batches or something. I'll have to check to see if they're as grippy, but both are much more durable and thicker than Andover, although they don't have as much friction on the untaped side.

I was given a bunch of Andover tape from my schools pro shop. It used to be all I used. Man has this stuff turned to crap! the tape barely stays on my stick blade during games.

I think I'm going to Comp-O-Stik, I just bought two rolls not to long ago and it's good stuff. Not a lot of sticky residue for the upper hand and it soaks wax in decently.

The last batch of Andover tape wasn't very good. If they went back to the older stuff I'd buy a case of black and one of white. I wish Comp-O-Stik was a little bit wider. :(

I just bought some Andover powerflex after using Renfrew's and I think Im in love! 2" may be a little wider than I need though

I guess you guys are talking about regular cloth though. I dont really have a good answer for that

The Gear tape I got from HG a few months ago is inferior to the Renfro I get at my LHS in El Segundo.

From Toyota Center? All I've ever been able to get from there is that crappy "Sportstape" brand that gets shredded after about 15 minutes on the ice.

findtape.com has good prices on Jaybird if the gear stuff doesn't workout.
