tapered shafts under 300grams

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Looking for help on finding a tapered shaft that weighs less than 300 grams.

In the past I have used the Vapor XV (285grams) and Vapor XXX lite (weight not listed, but i'm sure in the 285-290 range).

all the tapered shafts now are made heavy:

Warrior dolomite 310-315grams

Easton Synergy Elite 305 grams

NBH Vapor XXXX (not listed, but i've tried in store and definitely heavier)

Mission v-hex2 305 grams

Sherwood Rm19 (any idea on weight?)

I'm looking into the RBK 7K SicKick since it's listed at 305grams but based on 56". I figure The extra 2" might contribute 10grams making a 295grams shaft at 54".

my fave shaft was the xxx lite flex 87, but it's discontinued. anybody know where i can find one (i've tried every listed store in google, even in the UK!). I'm hoping somebody may have seen one in a local rink or mom/pop store. anybody have a used one they wanna part with?

I would worry more about the balance than the weight. Additionally, some of the shafts you listed are not all the same standard length, thereby changing the weight comparisons (not apples to apples)

Ballistik shafts 290 grams..(50 and 52 calibre)

On the website the 52calibreSE is listed at 290grams but i don't see any reference to the 50 calibre.

although i also the 2007 ballistik catalgue and it showed the 50calibre at 290 grams as well.

Or these two shafts the same thing but different model numbers now?

Do you realize there is only a 20 gram difference between the Vapor XV shaft and the others listed?

Do you realize how little 20 grams is? Roughly the weight of 6 U.S. pennies.

1 lb =454 grams, so 20 grams = 0.0441 lbs

You will not feel the difference, it's in your head.

Look for a shaft/blade combo that is well balanced.

Those 4 pennies make a difference... They'd balance out the combo. Right now tapered combos are some of the best balanced they've ever been.

I made a correction, it's about 6 pennies ;)

kekeke actually as of 2001 the US penny is 2.5grams, making that 8 pennies!!

but point well taken; when looking from that point of view it's hard to believe that such a weight can make any difference.

i've never actually weighed any of the shafts so i can only base myself on manufacturer's advertised numbers; however as they say the proof is in the pudding and numbers aside when i've played with the dolomite and the NBH xxxx they definitely felt heavier.

I use a composite blade of 127grams (which isvery light) so i guess i'm more susceptible to feeling the affects of heavy shafts.

yeah a light blade like that would make it feel unbalanced, I use wood blades with my tapered shafts and I add a plug to balance it out. I wouldn't worry about the extra 20 grams, you'll get used to anything and I bet theres got to be a tolerance from stick to stick anyway and it may not even be the weight they weighed.

I have a 52 caliber, even though it's so light with the slash reinforcement at the taper it felt blade heavy before I even put one in. Great feeling shaft, and I've skated with a guy who swore by it, just reinforcing the fact that weight means squat.

Perceived weight is something else. When I had my S17, marked at 420 grams, it felt quite a bit lighter than my friend's SL, marked at 425 grams, and I had a wood plug in mine and a lot more tape for the blade and handle. The S17 has an extremely light blade (probably why they break so easily) that makes it feel great in the hands.

yup i agree that the numbers game can be quite misleading, and in the end it's whatever *feels* good and balanced regardless of what the numbers say...

I have a xxx-lite and easton synergy II tapered shafts. Both have the same blades and tape jobs. I prefer the feel of the easton over the vapor. The easton has the better balance of the two.

FWIW - The easton weighed in under 490 grams fully taped. I never weighed the vapor.

tyco, i can't speak for the shaft versions of the XXX-Lite and the XXXX, but can for the OPS versions of both....

i was a NUT when it came to the XXX-Lite, and as a result of having difficulty finding it available in the curve and flex i use, i was forced to move on......so i moved on to the Vapor XXXX....and while the XXX-lite is certainly lighter, it is not such a significant difference IMHO that will affect your play....in some areas, the Vapor XXXX is head and shoulders above the XXX-lite....

just thought i could give some input that could be deemed helpful...

Despite the xxxx shaft being a little heavier, I would have tried it if it weren't for the fact that they don't offer it with stick'um grip (i love that stuff!)

If anybody else wants to part with their xxx lite flex 87 shafts or have seen one in a store, please PM me!

Thanks!
