New Imacs... tonight

Recommended Posts

For months I have been following the mac rumor sites waiting for the unveiling of the new g5 imac. And tonight is the night. The Apple Expo in paris starts at 4am (EDT), thats 10 am local time in paris. I will be staying up till 4am waiting for the new imac, because I am a loser, and I belong to the apple cult.

www.apple.com/imac - g5 iMacs are 2 inches thick (the whole computer!), the logicboard is right behind the display, and it is all enclosed in one 2" thick casing. The top of the line g5 is 2.5 ghz, but clockspeed isnt everything dexy. A 1.6 or maybe even a 1.33 g5 can beat your 2.2 (im assuming amd) prosessor. There is a lot more, like Front side bus, and cache, that go into the speed of your prossesor. Just because your computer can process info at that speed, dosent mena it can get the info in and out of the chip (alla fsb), etc, etc, neways new imacs look sweet

I can only imagine its price tag.

$1900 for the decent one. Neat idea, though it looks like an old tablet PC. I pity the poor bastard that has to actually service that thing...

Actually that's another area where apple regularly shines. I can't tell you how much easier it was to get in and out of my G3 then this garbage PC case I've got. Also there is a pic touting the simplicity and easy access of it's interior layout on the page Vapor posted. Also, I would hardly call a 1.8Ghz with 20" LCD monitor decent. The decent one is $1500.

I actually have already ordered mine :). Gotta Do what ya gotta do boys. And yes,(as jay has commented about) Geki, this machine is a breeze to service, just look at the picture of the computer with the rear case off. Everything is whitin reach, and neatley layed out. The "bottom of the line" 1.6 17"er is still a great computer, and more than respectible. The standard 256 megs of ram does leave some to desire, I will defiantley admit that. But, a beautiful computer, I must say, simple, and nice. Not to groundbreaking, but a great feat. G5 powerbook: your next

So is there like a formula or conversion to see how fast that operates to a PC's CPU? Since they're more efficient, I just don't know how to compare that to whatever I have at home.

Since pcs and macs are constructed differently, they handle different tasks in different ways. In photoshop benchmarks, the G5 is a standout, but in some other benchmarks, PCs shine. There is no "grand gold standard" on how the measure overall speed on a computer vs computer. I know, and everybody knows that The top of the line g5 2.5 dual processor isnt the fastest computer on earth, and sure as hell isnt the cheapest. But for the tasks it is ment to preform, IMHO, it is best

Sounds like you need a good pc case... I can get in and out of my Lian-Li and change EVERYTHING (MB, CPU, Vidcard, Ram, HD's, DVDs) in less than 15 minutes, totally toolless.

I saw the pic you guys are talking about. A zoomed out flash pic of "open" and "closed". when I saw the open picture, all I saw was a bunch of very proprietary looking shelving units designed to fit specific hardware, obstructing the view of what was actually under them. It looked nice and neat, but all I could see was the aluminum casing that they wanted me to see, not the actual components themselves.

The 1.8 20" is decent in this day. Let's face it, a Geforce 5200 64MB vid card and 256MB of PC3200 isn't exactly the most expensive (or best performing) hardware out there.

You're paying for the design of the machine (which is very well done and THAT is what apple excels at) rather than the actual performance you're going to squeeze out of it.

But I guess the argument is people are buying the iMac because of it's design (minimalist, saves space and looks trendy). For that, I don't think you'll find anything better.

I need a new laptop soon and I was looking at (I think it was) a 1.1 Apple since people recommend their laptops. Just wanted to gauge that against the beasts Dell has been pushing down my throat.

Very true. Hands down, the fastest music playing and internet browsing computer out there.

Mack... if your looking for an affordable laptop from apple, check out the ibook (www.apple.com/ibook). If you need some power under the hood, go with a powerbok (www.apple.com/powerbook). Matters what you are using it for. If you can wait, I am MERLEY SPECULATING, that the powerbook g5s will come out in January at the Mac coference.

Soon enough, every computer will be like the G5 with advancements in Quantum Physics and Nano Technology.

huh?

If you ever need support on a Mac it ends up costing an arm and a leg. If you decide to go with a Windows based laptop, check into Toshiba, they have a great rep and are better than what is being built for Dell right now.

That is WITHOUT A DOUBT the worst thing about buy any apple product. Their support is embaressing. You get like 30 days of support, then a year on parts, and its all limited, and its bad. They wanted 1000 to replace my logicboard (motherboard), so I devised a scheme to get a new powerbook, and it worked

Go with an IBM. I just got my T42 and am loving it. Completely silent, very fast, light 5 lbsand it has a great display. Cost me 1749 from the school store with no software, but I tihnk it's worth it. Oh, it also gets 4 hrs of battery life on about an hour or two charge time.

Whatever you do, make sure if you don't go mac, get a centrino instead of p4-m.

IMO, IBM's have always been too pricey. I say go with a Dell or Toshiba. Both are quality.

And I still think mac's are a good choice if you need a laptop (depending on what you're using it for of course).

The guy running the graphic design department of the company I used to work for used to sub out all his mac work and didn't want me to touch his macs until I showed him how badly he was getting hosed. They were charging him $400 or more for a $150 hard drive. Memory was even worse, he was paying $125 for the same thing I could get for $30. Of course I wasn't using parts with the little mac logo on them.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'd just need something to tote work around and since my home computer is a PC that gives an edge there. I just need something for basic work (spreadsheets, WP, database), some school software and useless junk like music, movies, massive porn collections, etc.

huh?

Quantum Physics is the physics of things that are extremely small. For instance, (I forget exactly where this took place) China or Japan made a car that was like one of those little tiny toy cars.

Nano Technology is really really small stuff to put it simply. I was watching a show on army equipment of the future and they were using Nano Technology to put together a suit that would conform to the body, tight like Under Armor. The suit would be made by a web like string that was electronical and it would basically detect the muscle that is moving and give the user super strength. It is hard to explain, you would have to watch the show. Some really interesting stuff.

This relates to the G5 in the sense that everything is getting smaller so soon enough they will be able to have like 5 GHZ and all these buses you were talking about a lot smaller. So something the size of the G5 will be a super computer.

For everything other than databases it would be fine. Unless they've made massive improvements in Mac DB software recently.
