what to do? callus on heel

Recommended Posts

hey all, i've tried to do a search but no luck

so lately i've been getting on the ice a lot more, 3-4 times a week for about 1-2 hours each time. i've had my nbh vapor xxv for just under a year and recently i've noticed my right outer heel area has been forming a callus/heel burn?!

is there any way to prevent or treat this type of problem from occurring again?

oh btw i've only had the skates baked once at my lhs, not sure if this could be the problem

any help and recommendations are appreciated!

I had the same problem in Vapor XiX, I wore UA socks and got waxed laces to help the foot lock in better, it helped enough where it became bearable.

greech, i will try picking up a pair of UA socks before my next skate.. i'm currently wearing reg. sport socks

schrempsky, it has never blistered there before, never happend when i had my graf 503's. it's bearable when i'm on the ice, but once the boot is off i can feel it swelling and it even hurts as i put my runners on

It could be the beginning of haglund's deformity. I've got them on both of my feet now, didn't with any of my old skates. Its most likely because the heel of your skate is too wide, which means your heel is moving inside the boot while you skate.

If it's a callous, get a pedicure ;)

If it's Haglund's, go see a Podiatrist.

It's probably Haglund's forming on your heel. I have a similar thing on my left heel. Get an appointment at a podiatrist and have them check it out. The guy I went to wanted to fit me with orthodics to control my heel moving, and also to correct my pronating problem. They also had a skate specialist who would fit the orthodics, and make any adjustments to my skates to help get rid of/control the problem. Unfortunately insurance didn't cover the orthodics, so I didn't do them.

There's a sack of fluid on the back of your heel, and when it gets irritated, it starts to get inflamed. I think they can eventually turn to calcium deposits, and then you'll have a big bone spur there. Mine hasn't gotten that bad yet luckily. Normally they're from your heels being too tight, or moving too much in your skate. They also call them "pump bumps" because girls tight fitting pumps used to cause them. Pretty common thing with skaters/hockey players as far as I know.

lol sorry, i couldn't think of the word "blister" at the time i was typing this up

but to the point, i also read up about haglund's and based on the diagram it showed on a specific site and what everyone's response is it could be haglund's deformity.

if haglund is from either skates too tight or too much movement of the heel in the skate, it sounds like a new pair of skates might be the least of my options as it can get costly :(

The bump comes from your heel moving around. . . if the skate is too tight, your heel wouldn't be moving around, but you'd most likely have heel pain while wearing the skates. If you lace up your skates and rock forwards and backwards on your skates, you may be able to feel your heel moving up and down in the skate, if thats the case, the heel in your skate is too big.

I used to have a bad case of my heel rubbing against the back of my old 9k's. A solution I found quite effective we're these little gel strips that cushion the back of your heel. You can find them at any drugstore.

habookus, have you found any issues with the gel strips rubbing off or peeling while in use? i've thought about putting a band-aid or those corn cushion pieces but afraid it'll peel during game play

i'll definitely try the UA socks and tightening the laces first, and hopefully that solves the problem and no need for a visit to the doctor!

but i find it odd how it only affects the right side of the skate, i guess either my right heel is smaller then the left or maybe somethings up with the heel on the right skate

thanks everyone for your input! i'll keep you guys updated!

One of the things the podiatrist told me to use was something called "mole skin." He said you could get it at REI (if you have those locally) or somewhere similar. He said to put a strip of it on your heel where it's rubbing, and hopefully that'll help cut down irritation.

Here's a little article on it.

My friend is using a Jr XXXX and has one of these on one of his foot. Has anyone had this treated / cured? Seems like surgery is the only way to remove the extra bone.

seems like it could be a vapor skate issue :o

anyways, i was at my lhs today and picked up a pair of sport socks.. they didn't have the UA in stock

so while i was there, i took a look at the one95 skate and compared them to my vapor XXV and the XXV they had on display.

first thing i noticed with the one95 is the inside of the heel padding/skin is a lot more smoother, felt like leather oppose to the vapors, the inside was a bit more rough and less padded/support for locking in the heel.

if this is the case with the rougher interior on the vapors, i might seriously look into upgrading to the one95

You can get Dr.Scholl's moleskin at most rite-aids, targets, etc. as well.

UPDATE:

So before playing some shinny tonight, I stuck a band-aid on the area affected, and use the UA sport socks

At first it was fine, 'bout 20 minutes in I could feel the pain and swelling. The UA socks didn't help, in fact the thinner socks had a less cushioning affect then the regular sport socks I normally wear. It got to the point where skating backwards was difficult. Also notice my left heel is slowly becoming inflamed also.

Afterwards, I told a friend of mine who works at a lhs, about my heel problem and he said that the Vapors have a wider heel area and that I should look into the Supreme series. He also offered to hook me up with his discount if I want to pick up new skates!

So it looks like I'll be picking up new skates hopefully in the new year!

Anyone know if they'll be doing any minor tinkering and rebranding the One95 with "Bauer" and when I can expect the rebranded one95's to arrive at lhs?

thanks!

Thinner socks are the last thing you need if you have a little bit of heel slip. Try getting a pair of the Vapor XXXX skate socks---they are a little thicker than some (which is what you need if your foot is slipping) of the other skate socks but still breathe good. IF that doesn't work like everybody said you might have too narrow of a heel for the skate.

I'm also developing a lump on the back of one ankle wearing Vapor XXXX's.. it'll have been asked before somewhere because ive seen it myself, but I searched and couldnt find it.. Coming from 9.5EE in the XXXX, what should I be looking at in the One95? bearing in mind that the Vapors are fine length wise, width is ok (wouldnt want to go any narrower) but i find them a little shallow.

TIA.
