Caps/Plugs in Skates with Tuuks LS2

Recommended Posts

I had LS2 Tuuks put on a pair of Graf 709's. I noticed last week that my blade was loose. I brought them into my LHS to get adjusted. The shop that put them on never drilled a hole to get at the screw to take the blade off. I knew this was going to happen eventually. They offered to remove the rivits and take the whole blade off to fix the loose blade and then suggested that I just drill holes in them. I agreed. I asked them if they had the plugs that are in Bauer's to cover the hole and they said no.

My question is this? Can you buy these plugs? If so where?

The shop should drill the holes. If they're doing holder replacements they should most definitely have the capability to drill a hole. You don't need the plastic cap for the hole, though.

And if your skates have a composite outsoled footbed, DO NOT try drilling the holes yourself without the proper drill bit. Standard wood/metal drill bits with shred the composite right before you make it through the boot.

Good call, didn't think of that. What is best to be used- carbide hole saw on a high rpm press?

Even if the soles aren't carbon a standard drill will jack the sole pretty badly and it'll be a pain in the ass trying to clean up the hole if the holders are back on the skate.

You are asking the wrong person, I only know because I messed up my G3's with my Dad's drill awhile back. They still skate fine but under the footbed they look like a mess. I'd think Darkstar might be best suited to answer the drill bit question.

Carbide bits are the best to work on composites.

However, when it comes to the Tuuk holes, I have had success with auger bits. It's great because it pulls the material back up with it.

Really not hard to do, you could file the hole if needed to get rid of the shards but the auger bit leaves it really clean. Standard drill is all you need. Aim between the last steel and copper rivet.

Bad post, they suggested that I have them drill the holes. I would never try it. But what about the plugs, where can you buy them. They didn't have any.

You don't need the plugs. And I've never seen them sold anyway. It doesn't hurt it to be unplugged, just take out your insoles so that it can dry out.

Chrisk - I'm telling you - it is a cinch. Just let the bit do the work and don't jam it down in there.

Usually, I would try it. Believe me it is taking a lot of will power not to do it myself. But, these are are fairly new Grafs that are just starting to feel comfortable. I'm not risking it. The only reason why I'm asking about the plugs is I don't want to feel the holes on the bottom my heel. I don't wear socks. Maybe I just have OCD. I have a bunch of younger cousins that play so I'm sure I will be able to find some.

Thanks for the input.

I have been working in a LHS for a bit over a month, and I have noticed on the U+ there are holes pre-cut for you I was wondering if they lined with the LS2 in the correct size.

As JR said, you're not going to feel the holes at all. My skates aren't plugged (heel or forefoot), and there are absolutely no differences in the feel/fit of the skates compared to when I had them in (even when I was still using the stock footbeds).

If someone was to sneak the plugs back into the holes before I was going to be getting on the ice, I would not be able to tell. Not even a little bit.

Hate to bring up a old thread. I just bought a pair of 11K's and had Tuuks put on them and again realized the shop didn't drill the hole in the footbed to get access to the nut to remove the blade. This time I'm just going to do it. I have have a set of the auger drill bits already. I just wanted to confirm that the hole goes at the center of the back 4 rivets. And, I wanted to know what size bit I should use.
