maxamillion 3 Report post Posted January 20, 2009 A good sentiment that i heard from Ron MacLean on HNIC:"Remember, always stay in shape to play hockey. never play hockey to stay in shape!"

DavidT 11 Report post Posted January 20, 2009 Ive never witnessed or heard of any deaths in my time playing hockey.I have witnessed a few incidents that would leave a man paralyzed had it been a smaller player etc. The refs cant control a situation and let things get out of hand and the rinks fail to discipline those players who seek their only intent to injure. number21 3 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Hockey may have a higher incident rate in adult leagues since there is some contact and the intensity of the activity. But I am sure many adults kick in other sports leagues. Any weekend warrior sports like softball, basketball, (maybe even golf) and the like could get too intense for someone with a weak ticker or an unknown condition.Like I said, sports that are more intense like hockey, rugby, lax, skiing/snowboarding etc. just have some higher risks to them. That may make them more "deadly".I may be wrong, this is all an uninformed guess.

Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 I'd be willing to bet that the alcohol culture around hockey is a LOT stronger than in almost any other physical and predominantly anaerobic sport - probably not a small contributor.Anyone got a statistics or sociology thesis due in the next year or so? epstud74 24 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 What kind of arena allows beer at the drop in? I'm all for beer, but I dont think it would be a smart choice.
Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 Shrug... most of the rinks around here (unless they have their own bar) only prohibit bottles because of the inevitable broken glass - cans are fine. Nobody really cares what pop you drink. That said, I don't think I could enjoy a beer during a skate. A flask of Bowmore for pond-hockey, however, is de rigeur. Thus demonstrating that to understand a thing is not to abide by it.

I've played rugby for years also, and there's a drinking culture there too, but then again I've never seen anyone show up to a match drunk, let alone drink during a match. Equally so, despite it being much rougher than no check hockey, I've never known anyone that dropped dead playing rugby.
