I love how Ovie gets brought into every convo just because Crosby was mentioned.

The question was what did Crosby do to deserve 3rd star that game?

Answer it seems is nothing .....

It is possible for a guy to have a great game and not show up on the score sheet.

Crosby got the third star because he was by far the best Penquin in that game...

I know its possible. But its been asked, and his stats shown outside of goals and assists ... what did he do then? Can someone name a play that brought it worthy of 3rd star? If not then the whole NHL overhyping Crosby has a lot of truth to it.

There's no doubt that the NHL over-hypes Crosby, I bitch about that all the time. That said, the NHL dosen't pick the three stars for each game, one of the local media does.

If you watched the game you would know, he created about 4 great scoring chances but when your passing to Matt Cooke all the time its not too likely to show up on the score sheet too often. When the Pens were down 3-1 he was their only player who didn't stop skating.

Malkin scored a very weak goal and was invisible pretty much the entire game, should he get a star?

And that's why the question was asked. Because for those of us that didn't have the game you just see the stats and say wtf?

I watched the game... and saw him turn a 2 on 1 into a bad play. He doesnt seem to have a drive for the net. He would rather sit on the perimeter and feed a nice pass. While that type of player is very important, with the players the penguins have, it almost seems to waste his talent. Put zherdev on a line with crosby and watch him rip up goalies.

Whats with the hate on Crosby all of a sudden? Ya Ovechkins probably a better player but look at the stats. Sids got more points and a better PPG average than Ovi. Secondary assists or not, a points a point. The kid does stuff on the ice no one else in the league can even dream of doing. He may not have the wrister or hitting of Ovi, but he makes up for it apparently. They're different players though so comparing them doesnt really do any good. Ovechkin is a finisher, Crosby's a play maker. They're both damn good at what they do so whoever thinks either one of them sucks needs to reconsider.

There is no hate on crosby all of a sudden. The habs/pens game was being discussed in the canadiens thread, I hadn't seen the game, and looking at the stats, I was just wondering how he managed to get one of the stars of the game when he was a minus player, less than 50% on faceoffs, and had not points.

Because it was about a game, not the general habs the mods put it as a sidebar into a new thread.

It wasn't intended as a crosby bash, it was a question.

I didn't mention ovechkin, I haven't compared the 2, I just asked a question, it's the crosby messageboard legal defense team that turned it into something.

Pens fans prefer crosby, caps fans prefer ovey, everyone in between are somewhat split.

They play different positions. It's not an ovechkin/crosby thread

I wish i could have found the numbers on secondary assists, but no avail. I weighted a goal 1.5 and the career numbers ended up OV 477, Sid 423. Its just the uneducated hockey fans with their hardon for crosby that hits a nerve. Look at cids numbers and his goal production has dropped every year, never hitting 40. I wish he would shoot more. He had a 2 on 1 last night with the defender out of position and the other penguin trailing a good 8 or 9 feet. Any other player would have shot, but he does almost a 180 just to pass it. I think hes embarrassed to shoot.

You mean those same uneducated fans who voted him for the Lester Pearson award?

Crosby's goals per game is 0.45 and it's remarkably constant in each of his 4 seasons. That's higher than Jerome Iginla's by the way, and he's twice led the entire league in goals. The kid is 21 years old, give him a break, we haven't seen his best goal scoring years yet.

He's never led the league in goals....never been within even 15 of first? I don't know where that phantom stat came from.

Ironic no one says any of this about Pavel Datsyuk or Joe Thornton. some guys are shooters. some guys are passers. One guy was gretzky and was undoubtedly a better passer but still managed nearly 900 goals.

Neither of those guys were playing in the game in question here

True and Thornton has been criticized, especially in Boston, for his style of play.

I didn't mean to say that...that's what I said.

It's hilarious that people call out a 21 year old kid scoring nearly half a goal a game over his 3+ years in the NHL as not being a good enough goal scorer. Look at a guy like Bobby Ryan, he is just now starting to produce at the NHL level and is the same age as Sid. in 2006-07 Ryan was playing in Owen Sound while Crosby was winning the Hart. I think a lot of people forget just how young Crosby is.

If this was just any 21 year old kid then sure, id be impressed. But this is Sidney Crosby, the savior of hockey, ambassador to the world and the reincarnation of Wayne Gretzky. With great expectations comes great criticism. deal with it.

Not sure at what point of the season this was done but some fan went through assists and counted up first and second assists for ovechkin, malkin and crosby.

"AO

28 total assists, 10 secondary (53% primary assists)

Geno

51 total assists, 16 secondary (68% primary assists)

Sid

42 total assists, 10 secondary (76% primary assists)"

the guy cant shoot, he cant hit, he cant even win faceoffs... all he can do is pass and ball punch. lol I would love to see how his malkins and ovechkins numbers match up if the second assist is taken away.

So....Crosby actually has a higher % of primary assists than either of them.

no he's not paid to pass. they are very different players.

ovechkins got the puck he's probably gonna shoot it. Crosbys got the puck he's probably gonna pass.

pucks in the corner: ovechkins probably gonna hit you and his team mate will get the puck. crosbys probably gonna battle, keep his feet moving and try and win it himself.

Different attitudes towards pretty much every play and their stats show it clearly.

Give Ovechkin someone who can really pass and his goals would probably sky rocket.

Give Crosby someone who can score and his assists would probably sky rocket.

Put em together........who knows......some of gretzkys records might get broken.

The problem with that theory is that they both prefer having the puck on their stick.
