Ahriman

Oh my poor backside...

Recommended Posts

Played a team in our adult league that we seem to have a history with for things getting a little rough. This last game was no exception when I was up-ended by what one might call a blatant trip that had me land right on my tailbone that wasnt fun, neither was it fun when it happened a second time 20 seconds later. At least the refs called both minors and we had a 5 on 3 which resulted in a PP goal.

AAaaaaanyways, I just recently changed out from my 9 year old CCM Supra pants because they were ripped in several places and had the (all important) tailbone pad fall out of one of the holes even. I had grabbed a pair of Vapor XXV pants after looking around alot and I though they seemed like a good replacement of similar enough style while being protective enough during games like that. Now I'm not so sure, even sitting on the bench I felt like I wasn't quite sitting on any padding; now the winces I have as I sit down on the couch a few days later and the Tylenol I've taken still seem to agree that they just aren't quite the same level of protection as my old supras once were.

Do you think it was just a fluke and these pants were decent enough or should I consider maybe switching to something else? I tried on quite a few pairs before taking the pair I did (the current CCM pants are just awful feeling to me); but if anyone out there has some recommendation for me, maybe jump up to the XXXX or higher end supreme line, I'd appreciate the insight.

Can't speak for the XXVs specifically unfortunately. I'm currently sporting five year old CCM 852s as pants and love the protective features on their backside, but of course I haven't had the same rips you have. If you end up deciding the XXVs just are protective enough, you might want to give a pair of Tackla pants a go. The most protective pants that I've ever worn (even if only in store).

get something protective, your later years would thank you for it. I've been wearing hockey pants ever since my third year of hockey when I saw my buddy fall really hard into the boards and just got up without a problem.

I heard the XXXX Core Girdle is really good, you might wnat to check that out.

With the exception of the top-of-the-line pants, all of the NBH pants i've tried on have poor tailbone protection compared to the competition.

I recently swapped out my XX's (after a similar experience to yours) for a Fuel 110's that i got on ebay for $45. Huge difference - the tailbone pad is about 2x as wide and 2x as thick as the NBH's. As mentioned above, the CCM vectors provide good tailbone protection as well, but with the missions going for around 50% off, they are hard to beat.

I had a pair of XXV's and felt they were lacking protection on the back side as well. The frontal/hip protection and weight of the XXV's was great but the tailbone padding was lacking.

I wore CCM 852's and RBK 6K's before them and both models had better tailbone protection than the XXV's.

I'm wearing Easton Pro Stock pants now and am extremely satisfied with the mobility and the level of protection that they offer.

You could also wear something like a McDavid padded girdle as your base layer with the pants over top. Most have cup-pockets, and the protection is enough to keep you comfy in a fall. I've started using them for coaching since my goalies developed the habit of taking out my legs when doing their mirror-drills.

Was this a fluke occurence or do you find yourself landing on your tailbone often? In my beer league I may be tripped and fall on my tailbone a few times a year, certainly not enough for me to want to replace my XX pants.

I do agree that the NBH pants are a little lacking in tailbone protection...but to me feel super comfortable, so its worth it.

sorry to hear that. hopefully it's not a full break. a few years ago I had a guy take my legs out causing me to fully break my tailbone. it was a solid year before I could drive home from work without wimpering in pain. I didn't miss a single game (had to be careful going over the boards and anytime I fell) but I'd say it took a good 2 years + to heal.

I had been wearing CCM Supra 420's when it happened and they were on their last legs. I switched to a pair of CCM Pro Stock 1052's bought from a local ECHL team and was quite satisfied.

CCM 520's

+1 on this recomendation. A pair of CCM/RBK MHP 520 SP's are what you want. They are pro-stock though and you need to search around for them. Killer tailbone protection.

I have said it everytime this comes up, but here goes again.

I bust my tailbone in old bauers, couldn't sit right for a fortnight.

The pants I wear now are Itech HP8000.

I got them on close out about a year ago.

They have exceptional tailbone/kidney/back protection, as well as zippers and good mobility.

I'm a big dude (6'3'', 240+) and have taken a direct fall on my ass a few times since wearing them and have had no lasting repercussions.

If you can find them, they are absolutely fantastic for the price (I got mine for $50)

First off, I hope you feel better.

I upgraded from Bauer 800s to a Tackla girdle last year. I have never been happier. The Bauer always left me with a very sore tail! I tend to fall a lot, I guess! The difference has made the high cost of the Tackla well worth it. Haven't had a real stinger since.

So thanks for the advice, seems like out of "current production retail" options the tacklas are where it's at. I work in a shop so new preferential between the discount and having it for this weekend, but I'll see how strong my google-fu is for those various prostocks and old models.

very nice catch, thanks, that's looking like it might be a winner. Would you say they needed some break in you just mean they didnt flex much at first or something else?

edit: oh yeah, and would you say those are similar to the giant padded tube-leg variety of pants (old CCMs, current bauer, etc) or more like a girdle shell combo fit (like the current CCM vector pants).

Would you guys say that the overall fit and protection from the NBH Vapor/Supreme line are pretty close? would you choose one over the other?

Or would be better to go with RBK 7K/5K?

...I tend to play in front of the net....too many cross checks in the lower back and end up on my butt too many times.....so im looking for the better spine and til bone protection.

They are tighter fitting than the Nike Quests I was in, yet the leg zippers allow for some more room.

They are a 2 piece, with some padding in the shell.

They offer huge bum and spine/kidney protection... and the pads covering the quads wrap right around the side and stop just short of your quads.

They needed some wearing in, seem fine now, but were hella stiff at first, as well as more protective than the last pair I had, therefore felt "Stiffer"

They are also cheaper at the sports exchange in Vancouver. I believe the hockey shop sells them for 150 in store. Its 125 at the sports exchange. Last time I was in there they only had size L and XL left in navy blue.
