Ahriman 1 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 Among other things, a primary difference being that the wolverine is remarkably powerful for its size and has been known to take down prey as large as moose - whereas gophers and badgers...Badgers are fierce animals and will protect themselves and their young at all costs. Badgers are capable of fighting off much larger animals such as wolves, coyotes and bears.Besides, it's still not a gopher, it's a ground squirrel.
epstud74 24 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 I'm pretty sure the Gophers own the W/L category vs the Wolverines or Badgers. Largely with all homegrown products. :D I assume you're referring to the Minnesota Ground Squirrels? In a comparison between Goldy and several kinds of rodent, the gopher was judged to look least like Goldy -- the results judged that his appearance was closest to a chipmunk or squirrel. Another animal Goldy is claimed to look like is the beaver, due to the buck teeth and tail. These inaccuracies are because when the gopher was declared the mascot of the University, the artist hired to create the mascot did not know what a gopher looked like. As a replacement, he drew some furry animals he saw at a rest stop. The gopher drawn and used as the original mascot was based on a picture of a thirteen-lined ground squirrel. How sad is that.... referring to the wolverines, but it's kind of sad how many rodents/weasels are in the Big ten. mgoblue 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 Yeah, Minny leads the all-time series with Michigan 127-116-15.That said, Minny amassed its lead largely in the 20s, where it held the series at 19-5-2.
epstud74 24 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 I'm not sure if the Gophers were regarded as a "power" back in the 20s. Probably not until Mariucci arrived on campus and the program took off from there. I believe Michigan was also a member of the WCHA for much of its history.
mgoblue 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 I'm not much of a college hockey historian, I really couldn't tell ya. But here's a link to Michigan's all-time series records vs. opponents (including scores and dates). The Minny series is interesting, both teams seem to trade long winning streaks back and forth.http://mgoblue.com/uploadedFiles/Sports/Ic...ries-scores.pdf
epstud74 24 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 Looks like the Wolverines owned the 90s, the Gophers the late 70s to the mid 80s along with 2000 and after. I believe UM has won the last 2 games between the two. Michigan has won 4 agains the Gophers since 2000, and the Gophers have won 8 of those games..It seems the Wolverine's dominance was in the late 40s and early 50s and definitely the 90s...There seems to be a period in the mid 70s as well..Check out the home/away records..interestingalso, check out your record vs Lake Superior State in the 80s-early90s. WTF ever happened to that program?
mgoblue 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 Yeah, Michigan won the Showcase games both last year and this year (this year's game hasn't yet been added to the archive). As for home and away, that's sort of been thrown out the window of late, as they now only meet for the College Hockey Showcase and neutral-site playoff games. epstud74 24 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 This year's UMN team resembles the 2005-2007 Wolverine teams..Young..The Gophers do a great job of recruiting in-state talent, but they for some reason suck at player retention.Okposo, Wheeler, Kessel, Erik Johnson etc would have been eligible to play this season. I'm not even sure if they'll keep Jordan Schroeder for next season since he's likely to be a top 10 draft pick. He should be a SR in HS along with Aaron Ness..Both graduated early to play NCAA hockey.
mgoblue 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 Michigan is the same way (though with more of a national recruiting scope). They lock up these guys who are projected to go 1-2nd round in the draft, stay for 2 years, and move on to their NHL or AHL squad. And that's only if they don't defect to the OHL before they ever get on campus. If everyone were to stick around, Michigan would still have Jack Johnson, Andrew Cogliano, and Max Pacioretty.Of college hockey teams, Michigan has the most current players in the NHL.Edit - http://mgoblue.com/ice-hockey/page.aspx?id=132784
epstud74 24 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 I think the NHL needs to quit taking our players until they've spent 3 yrs on campus..Much like the NFL

eddyo57 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 in all honesty, there have been rumors in Ann Arbor about breaking the record in every year after Michigan State held the cold war. i just think the rumors were started by some local fans. if you look at the link you posted, even though its not working. MLive can be very disceiving as it is just one massive forum where who ever can write what ever.

JR Boucicaut 3810 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 At that point it's merely a spectacle and not particularly going to see a hockey game. That's why the baseball parks are working better.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 At that point it's merely a spectacle and not particularly going to see a hockey game. That's why the baseball parks are working better.Exactly my point. Why bother even having the game if it's just an excuse for a hundred thousand people to show up and get drunk?
DarkStar50 680 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 They do for football games. The word "classic" has nothing to do with the game. It is an event.
mgoblue 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Having been been in the nosebleeds of the Big House (Freshman student seating), I'd say that they should be fine for viewing action on a regulation ice rink as well. The problem would likely be the seats closer to the ground (as was the case at the WC this year), since the slope of the stadium seating is very gradual.
