Skate Stiffness

Recommended Posts

He could want stiffer too, not to mention fit issues. I can't believe any 14 (or any age skater that is) wanting stiffer than the XXXXs though...

But some self appointed experts say that stiffer is always better.

Being 16 I think it would be ridiculous for a 14 year old or any age player who isn't done growing to be getting custom skates you would be shelling out cash ever 9-15 months for a new pair of skates. If your an average size guy I would honestly not suggest going too stiff epspecially with you growing and not being in the skates too long. Hope I could help.

Wen i was 12 i got the 40s over the 30s because of the stiffness. I like them really stiff. Also i can squeeze in every 2 years. Now do u think its worth it? How much more are customs? I also want customs because i have heel spurs.

Which you probably got from wearing the WRONG skates.

You don't need customs...

I agree with starsfan 71. The XXXX's are a stiff enough skate for a fourteen year old. You really don't want to go any stiffer for his size and weight. If fit is an issue then go to another middle to high end model of skate. Custom fit should be a last resort simply because of the added expense issue. The game is expensive enough without adding extra costs to the mix.

The One95s are plenty stiff; but, I would say that they flex differently than the XXXXs. To me they seemed slightly softer in fwd flex.

That being said, I think that you feel that you need a stiffer skate because your heel is lifting due to improper fit. As you flex your ankle forward while you bend your knee, your heel comes up. I believe that makes you feel like there is too much flex because the heel lifting simulates being able to flex the boot too far forward.

I suspect that if your heel was properly locked down, that you feel that the boot was significantly stiffer than you do now. I weigh 215 pounds and have strong legs, and to be honest with you I cannot imagine having stiffer skates than the XXXXs. If I were you, I would find a new pair of skates that properly secured your heel as your first priority well ahead of how stiff your boot is.

One more note: once you find a pair of skates that holds down your heel properly, you will likely have to alter the pitch, as you will feel like you are much more on your heels.

Try on a number of models, not just what you think that you want.

Good luck!

If you want some stiff skates I would suggest the CCM U+. For me at least coming off of the NB XXX's the U+ were very stiff. The U+'s also lock your heel very well in the boot with the U Foam. I suggest trying them.

If they dont lock your heal down thats a fit issue not stiffness. Also, at age 14 your going to need to buy skates almost every year so customs pretty expensive, just get out and try more narrow skates is really the only suggestion, at age 14 i doubt you would want stiffer skates, the reason they have extra stiff skates are for 220 pound nhl players , not for a 14 year old who doesnt get the right fit out of there skates. Not to mention custom skates take forever.

well - heel in U+ is huge (in line with RBK skates), so unless you have sizable heels as well you'd be floating in these skates

plus I'd not say they "lock your heel very well in the boot with the U Foam" - comparing with One95 & S15 U+ has got no lock at all...
