Wierd things you've done for hockey

Recommended Posts

Great story and even better writing. Time for a goalie novel?

Cheers, but it's been done by a better man than I: Paul Quarrington's Logan in Overtime, which, though excellent, is still well behind his King Leary in the running for Best Hockey Novel.

The one guy whose hockey novel I'd have loved to have read was Robertson Davies. Sadly, he was so busy pretending he had transcended Peterborough to bother with anything so plebeian.

It's odd that hockey doesn't inspire better writing. Baseball's got reams of it from W.P. Kinsella, George Plimpton, etc., etc. The only reasonable explanation I've heard is that the pacing of baseball is better suited to narrative, whether written or filmed; hockey is far, far more difficult to render.

Have you read Jack Falla? His novel wasn't that great (It's called Saved) but "Home Ice" and "Open Ice" were both brilliant collections of essays on hockey. Home Ice focuses on backyard rinks, and open ice talks about what being a hockey fan means to him. I enjoyed both immensely. Saved wasnt really that bad, it just doesn't stand a chance against the other two.

My wife was in the mood one night at around 9:30, which on that night just happened to be about the time that I would usually be heading out the door to play some pickup. I looked at my hockey bag, looked at my watch, looked at my wife and said, "you've got 10 minutes". I played the best game of my life after that....and she wasn't even mad.

Funny, my wife and I did the deed before pickup last night and I had easily my worst performance ever. In fact, I was so disgusted with my play i left the ice after 45 minutes and went home.

Turn down sex for shinny
Drop-in is on a schedule, you can have sex pretty much when ever. Not really a tough one there.

Leaving the office on a Friday night...I say to my buddy...

"Hey, you playing Sunday night?" (our regular shinny/pickup group)

"Yeah...80/20" (he always gives odds for his attendence at any event)

He doesn't show...on Monday...I say...

"Hey, where were you Sunday"

He goes:

"My wife winked at me at around 8:15...we play hockey again next Sunday...I'm not sure when she'll wink at me again"

*L*

Well, if he worked on a quick release, he'd find the time to improve his hockey game....

The only "weird" thing I do is hide gear purchases from my wife on occassion. I'll make sure that if I order something online, it gets delivered while she's at work and i'll use a check card from an older account that she rarely checks on. Just recently spent $400 for some Vapor XXXX's at a LHS and had the purchase broken up onto two different check cards to make make it more difficult for her to track the purchases. She always catches me in the end though. But it's like I learned in the military...........it's easier to ask for forgivness than to ask for permission sometimes.

Why bother hiding it? Just have a side account that some of your check goes to that you use for gear and other stuff you don't want to be blowing the mortgage and grocery money on. Works for me.

I think the best policy is to share the accounts, but be upfront about any purchases. There's virtually nothing I buy that I don't tell the Big D about. If she doesn't think it's a good expenditure, she'll tell me. I either convince her of my point of view or I take the item back. She's the same way with me, although it's fair to say that I'm the one who tends to notice more toys on store shelves.

It's a little like Mick sang, you might not get what you want, but you'll get what you need -- particularly familial bliss.

Most of my check hits the combined account. We just figured that is the safest way for me to handle my joneses without putting us out on the street.

I used to go out with a girl who was an artist. I missed her exhibition opening night because I was at the airport catching an interstate flight for a big hockey game. She was right royally pissed and rang crying. It was her first ever gallery opening. I felt bad at the time but she turned out to be a terrible GF anyways so probably good to get in early on the pre-emptive slack BF efforts. :)

All "hot" orders are delivered to my office.

LOL, but the thing is you have to act like you don't care. If you go after it like a dog goes after a steak you'll get it about as often as a dog gets steak. When you play it off like it's way down on a long list of priorties you'll be fending her off with a stick.

+1, but I was under the mistaken impression that women stopped doing this once they were married, but what do I know?

Am I the only one who reads the Justin Bourne blog? For those who don't, I highly recommend it if you want inside stories about hockey and weirdness therein from a guy who plays the game for a living. He is a great writer. Check out link below to start. He writes on THN and Maxhockey among other. I came across a piece by him by accident and ended up spending like 3 hours hunting down all his other hockey blogs. Great fun.

To read more Bourne go to his daily blog which is here:

http://jtbourne.wordpress.com

At the top you will find a link to his THN articles which it sounds like you read already. And also his Max Hockey.com articles, which are hilarious. His daily blog is fun to read too if you need to kill some time. And if you ask him a question about anything he writes, he'll answer you promptly.
