Upgrading Shoulder Pads

Recommended Posts

DSC00078.jpg

I used these through Peewee, Bantam, and Midget; was good for hitting and protection. Now im playing mens league (no hitting) div 1, looking to get more mobility but i would like to stay away from any shoulder injuries im ok with bumps and bruises.

What i was going to do is cut off that top pad.

Was looking into Sherwood 5030 (cheap to try) but not sure about the protection, so i was thinking instead of just spending the money on 5030s i would pay double for something that would definitely work.

From what i was told the 5030 are a lower profile then the Supreme classics and also sell alot better, neither were in stock so i couldn't try them out.

5030's are really low profile, and offer great mobility. The Supreme classics actually offer some form of shoulder protection. Both have low quality sternum protection though.

They don't have them in stock but i can still order them online.

I guess the ideal would be great mobility but still have overall decent protection where i won't have to worry about getting injured.

Friend of mine told me that some guys on his team in beer league were doing the sherwoods but also taking off the caps, not sure how solid they are though.

5030's are ideal for beer leauge, but if you still want better protection than what you can see in the pictures for your shoulders, then the Classics would be the way to go IMO.

I think you could be right, i think i can see why the 5030 sell more basically because they are the bare minimum. Question actually is are my pads now pretty slim already, and would going to the 5030 or supreme be a big difference?

what about something like the Bauer Lightspeed in comparison?

You'd notice a difference going from your current CCM's to the 5030's. Your pads seem pretty solid though. Why move away from them for brand new ones? I'm still sworn to my ageless Douglas Defenders. :P

Low profile and Clavicale is pretty hard to find. From what I hear Farrells might be a good bet but that's more of a guess you might want to try and find some to try on.

Your pad's don't look so bad now, but they're definitely a lot more protective than the 5030's. The 5030's are basically some thin foam padding that laces together, and the shoulder caps are just a piece of leather. No sternum protection, no shoulder caps, no plastic inserts. If you want to have decent shoulder protection I think you'll have to go with a regular type of shoulder pad with the shoulder caps. I have a set of Easton ST4's that are relatively low profile with pretty good protection, but they probably won't be any more low profile than what you're already using.

You could look at the Itech SP50's, which are like a more protective version of the 5030's. They're still the bare minimum though. What I do like is the shoulder "pad" is a plastic cap with some gel or something under it for some padding, and there's also a solid sternum protector. That's why I didn't like the 5030's, there's no sternum protector, just the laces. I was more worried about a shot hitting me in the sternum than hurting my shoulder. There's a picture of them here.

I use the Farrells and they have the 2 impact caps that are removable for your shoulders. I don't know what they're made out of but I doubt anything can penetrate it in beer league. They cost quite a bit more than the Sherwoods though so it's a totally different market for these. I paid over $100 for them but they were exactly what I was looking for and I don't see them breaking down anytime soon.

K i just bought a pair of Itech sp50's, going to give those a try and see how i like them. Doesn't look like i will get much less then that so if anything i think i might need more shoulder protection because it definitely has the sternum covered.
