Last year the NHL made the legal curve even "curvier"

Recommended Posts

Stupid question but... Last year the NHL made the legal curve even "curvier". Did any "new" curves come out to take advantage of that?

Pros get their own curves. Most retail curves were already legal but the Coffey was a 3/4"...now all retail are legal for USA Hockey and up in Canada.

I still don't know how they can shoot with a 3/4'' curve, just seems enormous to me.

I've played hockey most my life and I still don't know how they measure the curve, is it defined by the inside edge of at the bottom of the blade?

obviously would measure at the deepest part of the curve, no matter where it occurs on the blade, correct?

NHL is any point of the heel to any point of the toe. USAH is the bottom of the face to the bottom of the toe.

I just checked out the Sherwood 5030 composite stick at the LHS today, and I think the Coffey curve on that is even more wicked than it was on the old wood sticks. At 80 bucks I was really tempted to grab one. That curve is just insane.

I don't believe that USA Hockey changed their curve regulation at all.

USAH's maximum stick curvature was recently changed from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch.

Thanks, I haven't done any game this year so I haven't had to stay current with the book.

USAH never checks curves. I went to 2008 regionals and my friend had a coffey blade. HE actually curved it even more and never got checked for curve. Even the fans could see how big the curve was.

It's up to the other team to challenge the blade. It's not up to the refs to check everyone to make sure everyone is using a legal stick.

After dinking around with Sakic clones I'm going to find a woodie and tinker with it. Probably going to be bigger than Ovie's but we'll see what works. Hopefully I can get a decent rate from my LHS on making them because if so, it's banana time.

my first attempt at exactly that pretty much ruined the blade, soft as butter after one shot (XXXlite wood)

second try seemed to work better (one of the cheaper NBH woodies)

That's what I'm afraid of. I haven't seen any Sakic-ish woodies that look curveable around me, plus I'm wondering if the grotesque curve of the blade will be the problem or if it'll be structural from all the heating/warping.

Do you know any brands that are good for recurving?

I almost feel like I would be better off taking the glass sock off and then putting another one on after Im done. Fiberglass fabric isnt that hard to come by

Retail I'd have to say I'm looking for Christians or the older Easton Synthesis woodies. I realise Christian may offer a clone but I'm limited to what's readily available locally. There's a pro stock Christian that looks similar but it's shorter than an Iginla. I may just call Cyclone Taylor and see if they have any Sakic-ish pro returns.
