sucess at taking the smell away

Recommended Posts

Ive been doing some research and after 2 years of play about 3 times a week i got all the stink out. I took some 91% rubbing alcohol (afraid 99 would be to strong) and sprayed on the inside of my gloves (not outside, it could erode syn leather) inside and outside of my shin pads, girdle, elbow pads. then sprayed the inside and out with shout stain spray on everything, let that sit over night, put in the wash with a warm\cold heavy duty cycle. come out looking brand new and smell clean. I also put oxyclean powder in the wash, 2x concentrate detergent, and little dash of bleach.

For my helmet and skates i mixed in a bottle 3\4 full alcohol, then the other 1\4 bleach, sprayed on 2 times 1 each nite and no smell or discoloration.

And that won't damage your skin at all? I just leave my gear on the patio in the sun. My skates dried in under 2 hours (after I had worn them for the previous 6.5 hours) and my gear smell gets less and less after each time.

After i play on ice i hang all my gear in a closet, put a fan on it, and close the closet door. No smell and completely dry by morning.

I picked up some anti-microbial spray and after I play I take all my equip out and spray it (Inside of shins/elbows, inside skates, inside gloves, inside helmet). Then I sit it out to dry. After they dry they smell like the spray.

Yes, Yes! The Sun! Two other players on my team have been telling me that they are now drying their gear in the sun. They both report less & less smell. At first I thought that baking your equipment in the summer sun would make it smell more. I was wrong!

Wash your gear, then place it in the hot sun!

The "suns" have it!

great tip

I recently watch this entire special on the Discovery channel about inventors pitching their ideas to Billy Maes (Oxy Clean) and another famous pitchman. The show was mainly about this stuff called What Odor? Part of the testing the pitchmen did before deciding to rep the product was in a rink. You never can believe everything in those infomercials even when its a Discovery show, but I am planning on picking up a bottle because I was impressed with what I saw and it's such a small investment.

Off topic, but where do you play out of in Charlotte, is the sportscenter still in business?

Haven't you guys got the email forward praising the secret powers of hydrogen peroxide?

No I don't know how well that works. Tried it on the chin cup of my helmet last week and something still stinks up in there.

I have use a product called Odo Ban for a very long time which does well. I should go back to hanging my gear outside but taking it out of the trunk and directly hanging it on a garage wall is my convenient ritual. Then the day before or a few hours before I play, use a trigger sprayer and spray a diluted solution of the Odo Ban on that smell and it is at least much less offensive an odor.

Leaving your stuff outside is the way to go. But you need to be consistent with it and never let your gear smell in the first place. Chances are if it smells now, it always will.

For me, the smell reminds me of good times!

I just started playing again after about 5 years, and when i smelt the inside of my gloves, it just made me want to get back out there.

And when it gets too much, i chuck them all in the washing machine, and it gets them smelling good again (not perfect though)

I also put my pads in the washing machines in the laundromat with a half cup of bleach smells new after they dry with no discoloration. Just make sure you use mesh laundry bags to put your gear in before you put in machine to protect the velcro. For my gloves I soak them in very diluted bleach water and then soak them again in plain water to rinse them off.

I saw the episode of Pitchmen today where "What Odor?" is the featured product. Has anyone on this board actually tried this product? I am debating on ordering it. I am having a big funk problem with my gear, and I would like to know if this works.
