RBK 'graphite' inlay mod question

Recommended Posts

hey guys... i'm thinking about taking out those graphite pieces inlayed under the helmet shell and giving them a coat of color. anyone done this before? if so, what kind of paint works best? i'm thinking of a translucent color, so you can still see the fibre weave.

i know one can find rbk helmets with these pieces already colored, but i'm trying to do a custom job here, for fun.

let me hear it.

I think if you dye them with RIT, you can get the color and have it translucent. Or a sharpie could do the trick. But most people just use electrical tape.

I've done this with my 6k helmet. Took some metallic blue lacquer spray paint I bought from the hobby store, and sprayed it on lightly. You can still see the pattern underneath. I'll post a picture of it later.

how'd you remove the plastic/weave look a like pieces out of the 6k? last time i looked it appeared to be glued on to the foam piece and i didn't wanna remove any chunks off

Just put duct tape over them.

why the hell would i do that?

Which helmet are you doing this to, 8k?

Black 8k with silver inserts. want to make the inserts either dark green or navy blue.

they come off really really easy. it's spot/tack glued. if you look closely at some of the nhl guys, once in a while, they have one thats lopsided or shifty... one of the sedins had a shifty one for a few games. one of mine is loose right now, so i figured when i take the helmet apart to reglue it, i'll paint them. i'm not even sure how to take the hlmet apart effectively.

we'll see. i'll check into this RIT stuff.

People use RIT die to color skate blade holders and lacrosse stick heads.

Idk much about holders but if there anything like lacrosse heads there actually made from a form of nylon. and thats why they can be dyed. Carbon is a different story.

Permanent marker. It may rub off, I solved that problem with clear packaging tape... man, I hated that helmet.

Duct tape comes in many colors. He was saying use colored duct tape, not a pant or dye.

Ya, I can't see RIT having that great affect on Carbon either. If I were to do it I'd get some clear coat and a sample pot of my colour and mix till I got the level of translucency I wanted, then I'd wack a couple more clear coats on for good measure.

thats a good idea.

Here's the 6k helmet that I painted. I just took off the shell, masked off all the vents and sprayed 2 coats of paint on there lightly, so you can still see the pattern underneath. Then I finished off with a couple layers of clear coat. Be sure to wait a couple of days for the paint to gas out though. I wore the helmet one day after and the fumes gave me a headache.

I think marker looks better:

I didn't like the helmet because it didn't fit me well, for one... besides that, the gel pads moving around and pulling my hair wasn't nice. I could have cooked an egg on my head after 2 shifts wearing the damn thing. The width adjustment straps had to be repaired... Honestly, I don't have one good thing to say about it besides it now being someone else's property.

The plastic inserts on the 6k has a fake "carbon" print on them, so you can't really compare it with your 8k.

I hated mine as well. It looked goofy on me, it didn't fit and keeps sliding forward on my head, and the same problem you had with it puling my hair. I've switched to a Vector 08 a while ago and couldn't be happier.
