Washing equipment in regular washing machine

Recommended Posts

First the equipment:

Pants: NikeBauer Supreme One90

Elbows: NikeBauer Supreme One90

Shins: NikeBauer Supreme One90

Shoulders: NikeBauer Supreme One90

Gloves: Eagle X72 Tufftek

I was planning on putting them into my washing machine to clean them. No bleach. Cold water.

And then hang them on the Sport Rack in front of a fan to dry.

Is this a good option? Will they be able to handle it? Will they get ruined/moldy? Deteriorate? Anything like that?

Has anyone experience in doing this that can give feedback on the option?

Also, what would be suggested to clean a helmet?

Thanks.

I personally wouldn't do it with any of those. However, most elbows and shins have removable liners that are washable like that. If you want them clean-clean, take it to one of those oxidizing machines.

I took the liner out of my Jofa Shin pads it washed it with cold water light detergent and no bleach. They held up fine...however it didn't do the best job of cleaning them. it did help some though

What is that, and are there any located in Northern NJ or NY?

You'll get answers on all over the place on this.

If you do it I would try a front load machine at a laundromat, not a top load with an agitator. I wouldn't do the Eagles. Though I did put some nylon NBH 4 rolls in a machine on gentle and they didn't seem any worse for wear. With Eagles, I wouldn't risk it.

I have also ran my shoulders and elbows through with no problems, but neither are top-end equipment.

I have soaked my pants in the tub with some detergent then rinsed them with the shower. Next time I try and clean those I will try the laundromat. The spin cycle would help pull all the extra water out.

My shins a reebok 6k so i just wash the removable pads.

As for the helmet? I would just wipe it down with store bought sports equipment spray, then again with water. If it stinks, I doubt there is a whole lot you can do. Unless a shop near you has an ozone machine.

Realize any washing machine may damage your stuff so it's your call.

Thanks for the input.

I may just leave them be.

They're not that bad, i just like to try and keep my stuff in good condition so it lasts as long as possible.

Yeah, I only play once a week (wish it was more) and all my stuff is new with in the last 3 years. So the shock doctor bag/blower works well for me. I just wash the stuff to keep fiance happy. She has a more sensitive nose than I do.

According to the website:

# Floyd Hall Arena (Little Falls, NJ)

# Thomas Creek Ice Arena, (Fairport, NY)

# City Ice Pavilion (Long Island, NY)

Those are the rinks in the NJ/NY area that have the machine.

Just take a spray bottle, mix in 3 parts rubbing alcohol and one part water, and spray liberally. Then use the sun to dry, maybe a fan as well. Then spray with anti-microbial Febreeze and repeat drying process.

You should be fine unless you have some asshole teammate who diahrrea farts all over your bag! :D

Do not throw all your gear in a standard washing machine. There are specialized ones made to not damage your gear. Maybe try a scuff remover on the shell of your helmet, I'm not sure how well it works though. I don't have any experience with the inside though. I've never cleaned any of my gear to be honest.

I wash my gloves, elbow, and shins in the washing machine probably once a month. It does put a little wear over time on the equipment but normally it comes out fine. WARNING-there is the risk that it can completely ruin a piece of equipment. Don't overload the washing machine. A small hole where stitching is coming out will probably get worse so wash accordingly. I wouldn't wash the pants only because they are such a large piece of equipment and are most likely to rip. I wash on warm/cold with some detergent, bleach, and alcohol mixed in. Mix both thoroughly in the water before you put in any equipment. I've also heard oxyclean works well in there if you have any. Dry everything out well (in the sun preferably) and you'll never have any mold problems. As for the helmet, one word-Dishwasher.

I used to wash all of my gear in a top load washer with no problem, just don't overload it. If you can though, use a front load washer, they work much better. I got lucky (if you call spending 2k on a washer/dryer lucky) because my washer broke and got a front load with the sanitizer cycle. It work great for all the gear.

one of the guys already suggested... maybe stick all the gear, minus the eagles, in a tub.. give it a swirl, drain and rinse...

I wash my shin liners, elbows, shoulder pads every two months, and my pants and gloves every 4-6 months. I have a front loading washer and I put it on the "delicate" setting and use mild detergent. I hang them out on a rack in the backyard to dry, and they come back fresh and stink-free. My oldest piece of equipment is my elbow pads (Nike V-12's) and I must have washed them over a dozen times, and they're still in good shape. I have even washed my brother's goalie glove, blocker, C&A, and pants (can't fit the leg pads in there!) to no ill effects.

I would not recommend this if you have a top-loading washer though.

I've done elbows and shin liners in a regular (industrial/laundromat type)...top load...machine. Never damaged them or anything.

I've washed elbow, shoulder, wrist guards, Bauer and older Tackla pants and Eagle gloves more than a few times in a front loader w/ minimal wear. I just spray down my helmet w/ the shower head.

I have a high efficency top load washer, wash my shins, shoulders and elbow pads about once every 6-8 weeks. My machine doesn't have the spindle thing in the middle, just a big bowl that sprays water and soap so my equipment doesn't come out any worse for the wear. I would guess that if you're gloves don't have leather on them it won't do anything to them but mine do so I have never washed them. When it comes to gloves if they start to smell badly even with Febreze after every game and air dry then it's time to get new gloves. I refuse to be the guy on the team that smells like shit and we all know a guy like that. It's disgusting.

I don't know how good of an idea it is to but your helmet in the dishwasher. I think that would ruin/decrease the paddings level of protection. If you are going to put it in the dishwasher I think you should remove the padding and put in just the shell. Won't do much to get the stink out though...

Especially when it is all ONE90 protective and really nice Eagle mitts.

Also, I wouldn't wash stinky equipment with something I use to clean stuff I eat with.

if you use a front loading washing machine. no problem

i wash my shinguard liners, elbow pads, pants, shoulder pads with detergent and bleach.. no problems.

bleach is optional, test first to make sure your colors dont run.

gloves i wash by hand, use detergent.. comes out fresh..

I do it all the time.

Leave it out in direct sunlight for several hours, the UV rays kill the bacteria. Over time of course this will fade your gear a bit, but won't potentially destroy it like a washing machine.
