Car Opinion

Well my 2000 Ford Focus ZX3 is nearing its end and this means looking for a new or used car. Im gearing towards a higher end used car, simply because. The 2006-2008 Audi a4 seems to be the car of choice for me. I can get 4wd, a 6 spd and some sporty features for a decent price IMO. Ive also been looking at a G35, but the rear wheel drive in the winter cant be much fun. Is anybody on this board an Audi owner and how do you like them? My mechanic has told me to stay away from them, but all my friends who have them swear by them.

i had a '06 Avant and LOVED it. ended up convincing two of my friends to get audi as well.

if you can find a "certified" one from an audi dealer, you'll be in good shape (warranty, extended warranty, complimentary/prepaid service). your mechanic probably told you to stay away from them because he likely isn't familiar with them and would rather you buy something he knows.

audi had major issues in the 80s with reliability, but they are a premium brand now and have to live up to the expectations of bmw and mercedes benz owners. they're reliable, excellent on gas have one of the best proprietary awd drive systems on the market and they maintain their value (at least in Canada).

My family has gone through about 7 different Audi's over the past 6 years or so, A4 (x2), S4, Avant, A5, S5, A8L (x2) (all on lease). Everyone has loved every single one. The al wheel drive is great, they handle fantastic, and they are extremely fast, especially the 8 cylinder versions.

I am currently falling in love with the A4 2.0T. I work for a dealer, and the more I drive these things, the more I like them, and they can be had for a pretty good price too. They only been around $20K for one in and around 28-40K miles. I love the G35 too, and have to say it's one of the nicer driving cars I have been in, though getting an Altima or Maxima with the 3.5L engine would be sufficient as the amenities in those cars are pretty nice too.

You probably want the coupe, those are the only g's I like, but do you know there's a g35x awd?

I'm really trying to find an A4 S-Line preferably a 3.2L. Since i cant really afford an RS-4 or S4, the S-Line seems to be the most realistic purchase with some sport modifications included.

Yes i know there is a G35x, but its my understanding that it is only automatic.

hahahahaha.

Audi resale in the US is beyond terrible.

naturally... more people = more choice. more choice = lower prices.

Be warned, Audi oil changes are big bucks. A friend of mine had an A8 and got tired of the maintenance costs.

they only need to be done once a year, but yes, $240 is/was ridiculous. my bmw is the same deal, but i've got complimentary maintenance 'til 2012

Audi oil changes are no different than any other. I believe the manual calls for a 5w40 oil. Change it yourself and keep receipts if you want, and Audi can't void your warranty. They actually have a dipstick too, which is nice compared to some newer benzes. Keep in mind you'll have to remove the plastic undertray that covers th bottom of the engine, but that's not very hard. An oil change even using a good 5w40 like Amsoil and a wix filter shouldn't cost you more than 50-60 dollars.

Do consider the repair costs as well if you plan on keeping it a while. Being a premium brand, I would image that parts and repair costs are much higher than more common cars.

ya i factored that into my price as well. I'm certainly taking my time, but i should be buying relatively soon. Prices are too good to pass up on.

Do they prevent you from changing your own oil by using special bolts or something?

No, but I don't think too many people that buy a $60K car do their own oil changes. Of course some would say if you are buying a $60K car, expensive oil changes are to be expected.
