Bauer 3500 Helmet

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I just purchased a 3500 from a store, but im quickly starting to regret getting it. Is it a safe helmet? It looks exactly like an old CCM helmet i bought in terms of the foam. Should I be concerned if I'm just using it for coaching and maybe some drop in? Thanks!

I have not really seen any evidence that higher model helmets provide better protection. This is a common myth with motorcycle helmets and I wouldn't be surprised if it's true in ice hockey helmets as well. Is anybody aware of any studies on this?

IMO, you should be just fine with the 3500 - as long as it fits well (very snug without extra wiggle room) I think you should be good.

Higher end helmets are more safe, the foam is a different type and can take more impact force, but any certified helmet will provide enough protection.

Not true the least bit. I made the switch to a higher end helmet and havn't had a concussion ever since, also i got a concussion in a cheap motocross helmet by a mere tree branch, i got thrown off my bike a good 5 feet in the air landed on my head, i dont remember much but i never got a concussion with a $700 shoei. Theres a reason helmets cost more, they dont just stick higher quality foam and shells in there without any benefits. I'm sure a 3500 is fine but your statement that higher end helmets are never better is just foolish. Either you've been living in a cave for the last 20 years with all the technology or your just ignorant.

if that was the case with higher end offerign better protection you wouldnt see so many pros swap out the standard beefed up padding for the padding you found on your said 3500. I have worn a a 5000 and currently wear a 4500, no difference, and he 4500 is more comfortable

Yeah see thats not true.

What is true is that a 4500 with no shield or cage and the ear guards removed is the most comfortable helmet I've ever had or ever will have. My 9500 with a visor and the ear guards on is the most protective helmet I could possibly be wearing.

All helmets meet HECC standards. Higher end helmets exceed those standards by larger amounts than middle of the road helmets, low end helmets just barely meet the standards. Which would you want on your head...

Pros, since they are professionals and all, can make the trade off for comfort and not feel worried about the vulnerabilities they've allowed around their head. Your local drop in game, where people are not professional players are just as likely to take a slap shot that wobbles on a funny trajectory at your eye than they are to pick a corner; and then they'll swing their stick into the cage of the guy next to them on the follow through.

If I played with semi pro and pro players all the time, I'd wear that 4500 I love so much, since I don't I use it when I go practice my shots at the local roller rink and keep my 9500 in my bag.

Very true about higher end helmets provide better protection and it's not the same across the board.

I used to wear the 4500 and I loved it, but after having 3 minor concussions with it, i got the 9500 helmet and it has saved me or prevented any serious head injuries that I would've received if I still was wearing a 4500.

Like motorcycle helmets (which I own myself) the EPP foam actually compresses to help absorb the impact and lesson the blow to your head. With motorcycle helmets, you're told to never let your helmet drop, due to the fact that it's essentially a one time crash helmet, the EPP will compress or the state of the EPP will be compromised. I don't see that this is any different from higher end hockey helmets.

That's just a comfort thing. It's like guys who shoulder pads that offer barely any padding at all.

Catching a header with a puck is a pretty unlikley thing. Helmets are mainly rated on their ability to handled impact related to checking. NOONE gets hit harder than NHL players. If VN foam takes care of NHLER's im sure it is a respectably safe foam.

wow nice triple post ;) and its dual density vn foam that makes a difference...i have a goalie helmet thats single layer of vn foam you can feel a little pain from punches so ye higher end helmets have better protection no doubt

edit: just checked...3500 has dual density cellflex foam...i have no clue what it is but its should nearly be 99% worse than VN

Someone should have told that to Eric Lindros. Nhl players know how to check, if you have some house league dumbass coming at you elbows up or someone who doesnt know how to take a hit and skates with there head down, its gonna be worse then a nhl player expecting it at equal size. Nhl players know how to hit/take a hit 100x better then any of us probably do.

A'yeah, why are we still trying to debate with people that everyone they play with are not as good as NHL players again? Is that really up for discussion?

Wear the best helmet you can afford, or dont, they're your brain cells, they dont grow back.

Although I like the VN lined helmets for comfort I stick to the EPP lined helmets for serious hockey. At least if I do get a concussion I will know I done my best to avoid injury, by having the best possible helmet I can afford. When it comes to your head and brain, better be on the safe side than risk an injury that could sideline you for countless months. Don't skimp on your protective underneath, or on your head ,when it comes to this game and get a decent pair of skates. Then you'll be alright.
