Am I the only one who gains weight in the summer...

Recommended Posts

My body naturally loses weight in the summer regardless of what I do.... at least as a general rule of thumb.

I surf, and am much more active in the summer so I have trouble keeping the pounds off during the winter. Maybe I should just play more hockey.....doh!

When I was playing competitively I had to focus on putting weight on during the summer so I wouldn't get too light during the season. In college I would consistently come in to training camp around 210-215 and by the end of the season I would be around 200, sometimes as low as 195. Part of it was the amount of energy you expend, part of it was I wasn't lifting as much during the season, and part of it was just the beating your body takes throughout the year.

Atleast for last summer, I lost 10-15 pounds. Kept it at that same weight through the hockey season. Then put it on right after the season.. Now i'll lose that again over the summer training.

I'll bobble upto about 78-79Kg in the summer break (mid Dec to end of Jan) then by about late Feb I'll be back down to 75Kg just as I start getting into pre-season training for ice.

This coming pre-season will be HUGE jumping from lounge room size ice to full blown Olympic, is going to require allot more "fake charlies" at the local park. :(

Do you play pro in Australia?

I am the same way bro! Skating 4 to 6 days a week during the season, then hangin' out at the lake fishing all summer and skating 1 to 2 days a week = weight gain all summer.

what are fake charlies?

Doing Charlies on dry land. Maybe we use different terminology? It's skating from goal line -> blue line -> goal line -> red line -> goal line -> blue line -> goal line -> far goal line -> goal line, but instead of skating, running in the park :)

That's going to be quite the test Joe, I had enough trouble getting my fitness back for Oakleigh! :P

Personally I think I put more weight on in Winter and lose it in Summer, but I don't fluctuate by much anyway.

NEIN!!!! I play two levels down from the AIHL, where the men are "men" and the cross checks are a dime a dozen!

We also call it the beep test here. Its great for getting your stamina up. Not long till Docklands is up Phunk, you will need your fitness for Olympic ice thats for sure. Like us all.

Hahaha, indeed we definately speak "Australian" here. I had an argument with a guy from Canada, in Aust. for Uni, who claimed we both speak the same language. It would appear two minutes in the locker room + bar after the session convinced him otherwise. College boy! ;)

PS: I was under the impression that "Charlies" was a Canadian term. In retrospect it might be something that was in common usage 70 plus years ago. Maybe some of you Canadian guys can ask your Grandpas about it. We also use "Su-eys" for the drill, or "wind sprints".

"shuttle-run" I think its called back home in Singapore... not sure as I've never really done it before except for my stint in the Army.

Yes, I knew there was a name my Gym teacher used in High School for them. I think the general term was just "torture", or at least that which was in common usage. ;)

Thankfully, I have learned to love the shuttle run and all its on ice benefits.
